A DI Hardcastle Investigation - June 1917. Ernest Hardcastle, head of the Whitehall CID, is called to investigate the murder of Sir Nigel Strang, permanent secretary at the Ministry of Munitions, in his office.
Given his work, Hardcastle wonders whether the Germans might be responsible. Then another murder leads Hardcastle to a worker at Woolwich Arsenal, who is suspected of passing information to the enemy. But is there a connection? Hardcastle must find out...

Set against the distressing and heavy backdrop of the first World War, Hardcastle’s Mandarin is another classic murder mystery from Graham Ison. When a high-ranking civil servant is murdered, Detective Inspector Earnest Hardcastle is called upon to investigate. It is not until another, seemingly isolated, murder that Hardcastle begins to realize there is perhaps something larger afoot. Performed with a lively enthusiasm by veteran David Thorpe, and filled with a unique perspective from an author that has spent over 30 years in the Scotland Yard, Hardcastle’s Mandarin is an audiobook not to be missed.
