    Description

It is 2555, more than two years after the Master Chief went missing in action following a decisive conflict on Installation 00 - the massive, extragalactic Forerunner construct known as the Ark - as part of the final chapter in humanity's bloody 30-year struggle against the overwhelming forces of the Covenant. Now, as a tenuous peace exists between the humans and the Elites, a startling scientific discovery is made - and the riddle behind its Forerunner origins could very well seal the fate of the entire galaxy within a matter of weeks.

In order to unravel these dangerous secrets, a heroic, hastily formed coalition of humans and Elites must attempt to overcome their differences as they embark on a covert mission back to the Ark - an astonishing, enigmatic place beyond comprehension from which few have returned and where mortal danger awaits them all....

Not my #1 favorite, but good.

Some inconsistencies in the story that even upon first play through left me wondering if the author was working on multiple projects at once and lost track of thought or forgot prior details laid out. Otherwise, it was a good story, bringing you back to The Ark after being wrecked in Halo 3, and reintroducing the Elites who accompanied you in Halo 2 using 4-player co-op.

I'm not the biggest fan of the narrator, however. His pacing reminds me an instructor who is not interested in teaching. The pacing at x1 speed drags on, especially noticeable in the beginning. I changed it to x1.25, and that helped.

I like that there are still more to come, but would love another enthralling trilogy like the Forerunner or Kilo 5 series.

    Meh

After listening to the Kilo5 trilogy this book doesn't really compare. Very shallow character development and a story that sort of dragged on for a bit too long. This would have been a much better short story.

Scott Brick sounds like grey sweatpants look.

Would you consider the audio edition of HALO: Hunters in the Dark to be better than the print version?

    I'm Dyslexic so I don't read shit

What other book might you compare HALO: Hunters in the Dark to and why?

If you liked the other Halo books you'll like this one.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

He made what should have been an exciting book feel about as mind numbing as sitting in bumper to bumper traffic.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me wish Scott Brick would get a full laryngectomy.

    Any additional comments?

    STOP GIVING SCOTT BRICK WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If this was not a Halo book it would be better...

What disappointed you about HALO: Hunters in the Dark?

This book decided it would have all it's characters be simple and single layered. It brought down already developed characters such as Sarah Osman and it didn't progress or add to the story of Halo in any positive way.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I am a huge Halo fan. I feel like this was a complete throw away novel. To change the story to something i would find more enjoyable i would make Luther Mann a more solid character and not have everything just magically line up to fix problems that should have better answers to, and saying that i would need to remove the Spartan 4s since one is a solve everything by just being there character and the other is a background soldier with no reason to be there.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Every character was its own. Dialogue was lacking but that's not the readers fault.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from HALO: Hunters in the Dark?

I feel like i'm being way to harsh on this novel, but as a Halo novel this falls way short. I would cut every scene with Sarah Osman do to the fact that they all make her seem incompetent.

    Any additional comments?

First and foremost i am a crazy person who thought about this too long.

The worst books i ever read were the Innocent Mage / the Awakened Mage by Karen Miller because the dialogue was crap, along with the characters being single layered and felt the lack of progression.

Now this book is far from those but my complaints remain and to put the title Halo on this book that did nothing for the story except shit on already established characters just makes me question why they even tried.

With the upcoming Halo 5 and the audio dialogues Hunt the Truth, one would think the story would be in line with some part of the upcoming halo events, instead they threw away a part of the history they could have told better at a later time.

This book felt like cookie dough cutouts and very weak compared to my favorite books of all times Halo the Fall of Reach and Halo Ghosts of Onyx.

The one and only part of this book i found exciting was the monitor 000 Tragic Solitude but the minimal exposure to him as a monitor was irritating.

With all that said, i have listened to Halo the fall of reach through Halo Mortal Dictata, and out of the 9 i listened/ read this is the lowest halo story.

    A very good read.

I enjoyed this very much. The characters were interesting. But I felt as though nothing that happened within the story truly advanced the overall story arc of the Halo Universe. It was more of an enjoyable side story.

Was okay, but could have skipped.

The overall plot was so so. Was cool with the whole going back to the ark and all. Part of the plot seemed like a recycled plot point from Halo 3 (that’s all I’ll say without giving plot away). It was cool to see a group of Elites working with humans (the only good concept in this book IMO).

As for Scott Brick’s performance, it was bad. He read the whole book as though he was lethargic. He gave no emotion even during some of the most action packed scenes in the book. I’m going to avoid anything with his name on it in the future.

Overall the book was not horrible. It was not entirely original with a fresh plot for Halo’s story universe, but it was something to listen to and take a break from other books I’m listening to. If your a die hard Halo fan, you may like this book. For me it was nothing special or new, but still a bit fun.

    Decent story...

It was a decent effort, enjoyable and well told. I look forward to anything else from this author in the Haloverse.

Not bad, not great, but good worldbuilding.

Why do they keep hiring Scott Brick?! If old, gray sweatpants could talk, they would sound like Scott Brixk. Otherwise, I enjoyed this book. it wasn't my favorite, but better than New Blood overall. New Blood had higher Hugh's and lower lows, but this one is pretty good throughout. It felt more like a world building novel than a story that's good by itself. Worth a listen and won't disappoint you, in my opinion.

A Fine Addition to My Collection

I very much enjoyed Hunters in the Dark. You probably will too. Scott Brick, by now, has narrated quite a few novels in the Halo series, so you're probably already familiar with him. He does an adequate job, though he doesn't change his voice at all when speaking for different characters, so it's sometimes a bit difficult to know who is speaking. He's also a bit too slow for my taste, so I increase the speed to 1.05x and that speeds things along plenty.

    Should you buy it?

Yes. If you enjoy learning about the Halo universe, then this will be a great read for you. I'm always interested in learning about the events that take place post-2552, after the Covenant War ends, and this book does that well.

    Great story but the narrator...

Story is good, plot solid for a halo book but the narrator feels so out of place... He rather should read Stephen King or some horror books. His voice and expressions feel so drowzy and make me feel tired and sleepy, not tense like i should feel...

Kinda ruined the book a bit for me. Dont get me wrong, he has a great voice but its out of place for this book. Otherwise great
