Ramble Book is about parenthood, boarding-school trauma, arguing with your partner, bad parties, confrontations on trains, friendship, wanting to fit in, growing up in the '80s, dead dads, teenage sexual anxiety, failed artistic endeavours, being a David Bowie fan and how everything you read, watch and listen to as a child forms a part of the adult you become. It’s also an audiobook about the joys of going off topic and letting your mind wander. And it’s about a short, hairy, frequently confused man called Adam Buxton.

In the 1980s, Nina Stibbe wrote letters home to her sister in Leicester describing her trials and triumphs as a nanny to a London family. There’s a cat nobody likes, a visiting dog called Ted Hughes (Ted for short) and suppertime visits from a local playwright. Not to mention the two boys, their favourite football teams, and rude words, a very broad-minded mother and assorted nice chairs.

Histoire
February 1862. The Civil War is less than one year old. The fighting has begun in earnest, and the nation has begun to realize it is in for a long, bloody struggle. Meanwhile, President Lincoln’s beloved 11-year-old son, Willie, lies upstairs in the White House, gravely ill. In a matter of days, despite predictions of a recovery, Willie dies and is laid to rest in a Georgetown cemetery.
Description
From much-loved documentary maker Louis Theroux comes a funny, heartfelt and entertaining account of his life and weird times in TV.
In 1994, fledgling journalist Louis Theroux was given a one-off gig on Michael Moore’s TV Nation, presenting a segment on apocalyptic religious sects. Gawky, socially awkward and totally unqualified, his first reaction to this exciting opportunity was panic. But he’d always been drawn to offbeat characters, so maybe his enthusiasm would carry the day. Or, you know, maybe it wouldn’t....
In his book, Louis takes the listener on a joyous journey through his life and unexpectedly successful career. Nervously accepting the BBC’s offer of his own series, he went on to create an award-winning documentary style that has seen him immersed in worlds as diverse as racist US militias and secretive pro wrestlers, the violent gangs of Johannesburg and extreme drinkers in London. Arguably his biggest challenge was corralling celebrities in his When Louis Met series, with Jimmy Savile proving most elusive. Blindsided when the revelations about Savile came to light, Louis was to reflect again on the nature of evil he had spent decades uncovering.
Filled with wry observation, larger-than-life characters, and self-deprecating humour, this is Louis at his insightful and honest best.

Really great!
A brilliant read, and even better that it is voiced by the man himself. His use of accents bring the piece to life and is a really interesting venture into his work and life surrounding it.

To be honest more interesting than I expected
Full disclosure, Im a fan of Louis! After seeing him speak by chance in Melbourne I bought this book. I didn’t expect the depth of analysis of self which was not in the least indulgent. The examination of Saville and his crimes I felt was important and personal - and allowed space to think about the unthinkable - it has to happen in some way in order to support victims and stop it happening to more people.

Really enjoyable
The narration is mesmerising in parts. Louis' voice is consistently enjoyable but laugh out loud when he does the accents of people featured in his book. Found it all interesting and it's impressive to appreciate the scope of his documentaries. I never fully appreciated his style of interviewing but there were some docs that were so good. I liked Louis' reflection on the Saville years and felt for him being blindsided but also having a sense of unease. Nancy hits the nail on the head regarding his strengths and flaws. The epilogue is really touching and his charm and reflections are worth listening to. Enjoying the podcasts too.

Therouxly Marvellous
Brilliant overview of his childhood, upbringing, relationships, insecurities and of course key parts of hia career. I love Louis and I loved this book. Glad that he only went 80% on the Saville impression. Never go full Saville.
