Description

Lucy Brewer would never have guessed that her best friend, Duffy McCready (of McCready’s Bait Shop & Funeral Home) has been in love with her since they were kids. Fear of rejection and his own romantic complications prevented Duffy from confessing his true feelings in high school, so he stood by and watched her wed Wayne Bowman right after high school. Wayne had always been a cheapskate, so it comes as no surprise when he suffers a fatal accident while fixing his own truck.

Even as her family and friends invade Lucy’s life and insist that the new widow is too fragile to do much beyond weeping, Lucy is ashamed to admit that life without Wayne is easier, less complicated. After all, no one knew what a relentless, soul-grinding trudge marriage to Wayne had been. Only Duffy can tell she’s hiding something.

In need of a fresh start, Lucy asks Duffy to put his cabinet-building skills to use, transforming the town's meat shop into a bake shop. As the bakery takes shape, Lucy and Duffy discover the spark that pulled them together so many years ago. Could this finally be the second chance he’s always hoped for?

Once again Molly Harper “writes characters you can’t help but fall in love with” (RT Book Reviews) in this charming and entertaining love story.

great addition to the series

As a long time fan of Molly's work, this addition to the Southern Eclectic Series doesn't disappoint. The book is full of Molly's signature humor and snark. And you just can't go wrong with Amanda Ronconi's narration!

There is not one of her books that I do not like.

This just completes the love stories for me. I’m so happy that Duffy and Lucy found happiness and each other. This book makes you feel good inside just like the others.

So sweet ...

This was a sweet story not clean per-say but ... Sometimes it’s nice to read a romance that’s more romance and less erotica. And this book does not need an over abundance of sexy times because it has GREAT dialogue! It sounded spontaneous and flowed organically and it wasn’t overdone with puns, regional influences or cluttered with cultural references. Lucy and Duffy sounded comfortable like old friends should. This was my first Molly Harper book and it will not be my last I like her approach and focus. Normally I hate the POV not being from the character when reading romance but honestly I barely noticed and was very relaxed while reading this. Amanda Ronconi is extremely easy on the ear. I have anxiety and with that sound sensitivity so AR that’s a big compliment. Sometimes good books don’t get listened to because I can’t handle the sound quality or the voice itself. She also has a good range I was impressed with how many characters she produced and kept in sound. I will be searching for more of her work as well.

Entertaining Fun with a touch of sugar sweet!

Gimme Some Sugar is entertaining and fun. It is at times light and sweet as sugar, but also emotional and engaging.

Lucy returns to small town, Lake Sackett with her young daughter to move on with her life after becoming a widow. She wants to open a bake shop, face down some ghosts of her past, and protect her daughter from the craziness that is her in laws.

I started this book in paperback, but switched to audio. I love listening to these stories on audiobook because of the great narration. This story is part of the Southern Eclectic Series but can be read as a standalone.

Another hit for Harper and Ronconi

Loving this book series so much. Molly Harper just knows how to write quirky (but not over quirky) characters who are likable and fun. And Amanda Ronconi really brings them to life. I love the Southern Eclectic series and hope this isn't the last book. It's not, right? RIGHT???

Fantastic Story! Great Characters!!!

OMG This series needs to be made into a movie and/or TV show!! Seriously!! Between the great mixture of humor and romance, you have a fantastic supporting cast of characters that literally make you want to move to Lake Sackett, GA and become friends with the entire McCready clan!!

I stayed up til 2AM to finish listening to this story because I wanted to know what came next! However, you end up also falling for the characters and you don't want it to end and you can't put it down!

I've been hoping that Duffy would get his own book! I was so happy to see glimpses of the potential story to come while listening to "A Few Pecans Short of a Pie (Southern Eclectic #2.5)" and when the blurb for "Gimme Some Sugar" was released... woohooo!!

GIMME SOME SUGAR is full of the great characters we've have come to love in Molly Harper's stories! Add a sprinkling of humor, a dash of sass and a great helping of wonderful storytelling and you have this delicious creation that is the Southern Electric Series.

Oh... and some of the sayings!!! LOVE them!!! Need to start writing them down!!

I love Amanda Ronconi and her performance is great!!! I will say that GIMME SOME SUGAR would have been phenomenal if it was performed as a duet with a male narrator! Especially since Duffy has such a large part in this story!

Overall, this series continues to rock and leaves you wanting more!! What would be even better? If this series was made into movies and/or tv series! Hey PassionFlix, I'm talking to you!!!

Fun Lake Sackett story

Setting: Lake Sackett, GA Contemporary
Genre: Rom-com
Lake Sackett native Lucy Bowman (née Brewer) has returned to town with her 4 year old son after an absence of 10 years. She is the recent widow of Wayne Bowman, also a native of the Lake Sackett who had been happy to leave his trailer park Georgia past behind to become an executive in Houston. Now Lucy is back, determined to open a bakery with the insurance money so she can support herself and her son. Unfortunately she is being sabotaged at every turn by her late husband’s family. But fortunately her best friend, Duffy McCready (of the McCready Bait Shop and Funeral Home family), has her back. Duffy has been in love with Lucy since 7th grade, but fearing the loss of her friendship he never declared himself. Instead, Duffy watched Lucy date Wayne Bowman through high school, said nothing as she followed him to an out of state college, and stood by when she married him and settled in Texas. Meanwhile, Duffy got suckered into a marriage to Lana, a faithless woman, whom he divorced soon after. However, he can’t seem to stop himself from servicing her whenever she is between men. But now, with Lucy back he is determined to finally follow-up on his feelings. Naturally the romance runs into problems because, you know, “the course of true love never did run smooth”. Characters from previous novels in the series show up in minor roles as the McCreadys face changes in their business.
This is a good book. Molly Harper provides a simple plot with interesting, well-developed characters and her standard wit. The dialogue is often a laugh-inducing delight. It is not as noticeably mired in pop culture as her earlier work so may better stand the test of time.
The narration provided by Amanda Ronconi is excellent in this third-person POV production. Using pacing, tone, and accents she differentiates well between characters. She also maintained consistency with characters from earlier in the series.

I need another glucose hit

This is the final book in the series, but I’m not ready to say good-bye. This is a wonderful store and companion to “A few Pecans Short.” It’s a great comedic book with some life lessons and love. Never gets boring.
