Description

What does it mean to be human? We've all heard it said: It's who you are that matters, not what you do. Really? Where do the scriptures teach that? After all, from the first page of the Bible forward, human beings were made to rule over the Earth, to gather up the raw materials of planet Earth, and to carve out a world. Theologically rich yet down to earth and practical, Garden City speaks to all of us who are searching for our calling in life or just trying to find meaning in the everyday. In the end this audiobook is an invitation to ask the ancient, primal, human question: Why am I here, and what should I do about it?

Work & play as worship: a must listen for any age

What made the experience of listening to Garden City the most enjoyable?

The author is very eloquent and for the most part, seamless in his transitions and verbosity. Listening to the book is highly instructive and motivating. I couldn't help listening to it, even for a moments drive to pick up some milk from Safeway.

What other book might you compare Garden City to and why?

There really is not another book on the market like this one. It's straightforward, affirming, and refreshing. I did hear a sermon series identical to this at Salem Alliance Church a couple years back, but loved the rich depth Comer goes into it.

What does John Mark Comer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I think listening to an author read their own material offers more depth and connection. I would have missed spots here and there just reading the book on my own. Comer's moments of emphasis, encouragement, and wit are 3/4's there without hearing his personality through the audio recording.

Any additional comments?

The only thing I was bummed about was vocal citations for references. Comer will state, "One of my favorite Hebrew scholars..." or, "an amazing, life-changing book I read said...". These are just a couple of a heaping handful of moments in the book. He cites at moments but not thoroughly. Reading the book, he probably cites them properly, as I'm sure Zondervan requires. Just wish he did in the audiobook for my further reading, even just the name of that Sabbath book, scholars, authors, etc.

Great info and perspective

I really enjoyed this book and loved the fresh perspective on work and creating. I have a whole new understanding of why we were put here and what our purpose is. This gave me a new appreciation for the job I already have and how I can serve others through it.

A must read

Why and how to think about the work we do could not be better summed up. The biggest shock is that heaven isn't the end and what we do doesn't lead to 24/7 harp singing on golden streets. There is so much more to our meaning and our life. The church is focused on the wrong ending of the story. This book helps frame what the ending actually is. And shocker...it's work. Because we were made to create.

Wow

I can’t fully articulate how impactful this book was for me. It put into words concepts I’ve carried in my heart and affirmed the way God has lead me.

John Comer is a phenomenal writer and visionary. Powerful analogies that truly lead me to the main thing and it has settled in my heart.

I have to get the print book for my library.

Full of treasures

I like that the author narrates. His personality comes through well enough in his writing, but especially in his narration. It's like sitting in a coffee shop with a wise friend who loves to talk about his faith and his place and purpose as a child of God.

Thought Provokingly Good

This book is great. Exactly what the tire frustrated masses need to hear. I've listened to several talks by Mike Rowe give similar points from a practical outlook, but this opens the door even further to include a more spiritual, personal and fulfilling view. A perfect listen for anyone anywhere.

Copywriting

This book is an exact replica of Every Good Endeavor by Tim Keller. Even uses the same examples/illustrations. Only difference is the aesthetic cover.

Terrific! Crucial! Great!

Please do yourself a huge favor and "hear" this book! Actually no matter if you're a Christian or not, because it is a message to EVERY human being, since it concerns everybody anywhere at ANY TIME! Take this opportunity of God speaking to you and let your perception of reality (concerning work, rest and being human) be shaped by him in his grace. What is said in this book is so so crucial. It has to be heard everywhere. Thanks for this book!
