    Description

The first original novel tying into the critically acclaimed and much-missed Firefly series from creator Joss Whedon

The Battle of Serenity Valley was the turning point that led the Independents to their defeat at the hands of the Alliance. Yet the Browncoats had held the valley for weeks against all odds, before being ordered to lay down their arms. Command stated they refused to send in airpower because the ground war was "too hot". But the soldiers who were there insist that was not true....

While picking up a new cargo on Persephone, Captain Malcolm Reynolds is kidnapped by a bunch of embittered veteran Browncoats who suspect him of sabotaging the Independents during the war. As the rest of the crew struggle to locate him, Mal is placed on trial for his life, fighting compelling evidence that someone did indeed betray them to the Alliance all those years ago. As old comrades and old rivals crawl out of the woodwork, Mal must prove his innocence, but his captors are desperate and destitute, and will settle for nothing less than the culprit’s blood.

    Still Flying

Once upon a time there was a TV show. Got cut down before folks really had a chance to appreciate it. Now there's Star Wars and Star Treks even a funny doc with a time machine. But when I tell you that little crew of 9 on board a rinky firefly class went down as my favorite piece of fiction I want you to understand my full meaning. Now I know what you're thinking, hoping for more Firefly is a long wait for a ship don't come. And you'd be right. This ain't the genuine article. Little too much talk of what was rather then creating more. But before long you'll get the vibe of where the tale is really goin. Guess I'm too harsh a judge on this particular text but only cuz I love it so. Could have been better? Sure. But it's awful lonely out here in the black. Nice to have something on my horizon. Might not be much but it's enough.

Take me out to the black!

I loved absolutely every minute of it! It was like getting episode 1 of a 2nd season... an episode that was over NINE fantastic hours long! We get some new information and insight regarding some crew members, but nothing not in keeping with established canon (thank you for having Joss Whedon involved!) - overall, it was great!

The narrator did a good job of capturing the unique "sound" of each character, without trying to impersonate or "sound" like the actors that made the characters famous - and while I'll admit I would have preferred Nathan Fillion as a narrator (I mean, c'mon - right?) I think the narrator did a great job, and I hope they keep him for the whole series (and I hope the series never ends)!

    Browncoats forever!

    Shiny, let’s be bad guys!

I truly enjoyed this trip back to the “VERSE.” In The author brought in backstory, advanced characters like Shepherd Book, used iconic dialogue from the series, and told a fun tale. If you are a fan of Firefly, you will enjoy. I eagerly await the next installment.

Zoë Washburne : Preacher, don't the Bible have some pretty specific things to say about killing?

Shepherd Book : Quite specific. It is, however, somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps.

Like fanfiction from the writer's room

It's not perfect, but it's pretty damn good. The story overall is solid. It drags a bit at times, but not much and not for long. Some of the references to the show feel a little shoehorned, but others feel natural. The dialogue for each character feels right on the money for the most part, with a few deviations. You can tell the author is a Browncoat and loves the show as much as the rest of us. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The narration is fantastic. The narrator nails Malcolm Reynolds and mimics the intonations of the rest of the crew surprisingly well. The narrator is either a Browncoat himself, or knew the importance of the characters and did his homework. Either way, he pulls it the hell off.

I highly recommend it to any Firefly fan or fans of scifi western.

I tried to set a low bar, but it still not there

I knew when I got this it was risky as I LOVE firefly, best TV show ever. The characters, sound, and cadence is so much of the series that trying to put it in an audio book is a challenge. I wanted to give this 1.5 stars, but decided to round up. I may be being slightly unfair due to my high sights for the series, but I most definitely did not enjoy it.

The story was pretty weak and a third of the book was the author describing scenes from every episode from the series, from Jayne's hat to Wash's dinosaurs to where Kaylee bought here pretty dress to different actions they made. While I like the tie in, it was too overt for me as if the author was trying too hard. I won't go into the story with any spoilers but it had enough depth for a 44 minute episode, not 9.5 hours of audio.

The narrator also failed for me. He was not awful, but his voices did not work for me (perhaps as they are already in my head) and I really found them annoying. Most characters sounded VERY similar, yet had enough added to make it hard to listen. If it could not be better, I would have preferred no attempt and he let me supply my own.

Overall for me, a complete disappointment despite the good reviews.

    Love the idea...Couldn't finish it...

Before I send this back, I figured I had better bring these ratings back down to earth. I know a lot people do not rate books before they return them.. please do so... Everything about this book–except the concept–is weak. Okay, the writing is "alright".. but the author is trying to parallel the show so much, he has no room to be creative and let characters breathe. Careful with this one...I gave it the extra overall star for its cover–the best part about the book.

    Extremely disappointing

Let me start by saying that I absolutely love Firefly. I own 2 dvd sets (1 to loan out) and also bought it again when it came out on blue ray. I would consider myself a huge fan. This audiobook makes me sad and I am shocked that it is officially affiliated to Firefly. The story is cringe worthy and be prepared to constantly roll your eyes at the plethora of regurgitated show references. The narrator didn’t help the bad story either. He seemed to struggle with the “space western” drawl. I cannot in good conscience recommend this book to anyone.

I REALLY wanted to love this book

...But I didn't. I found myself tuning out through portions of it and generally waiting for it to be over. It has all the characters we love, but they are not quite the same. Different enough to make the story NOT be a part of the cannon that is Firefly. I don't know how else to explain it. If you're a fan of the 'verse, definitely give it a listen, but don't expect to be immersed and in love like you were with the show and the movie. I can only give it a shrug instead of the five stars I wanted to give.

    Returning to the well...

Don’t get me wrong. I’m a confirmed browncoat, and more time with these beloved characters is a good thing. That said though entirely too much time is spent in this title repeating and describing events from the series. No one listening doesn’t know those episodes backwards and forwards. We didn’t need a recap and definitely not dozens of them. Just tell a good story and drop the overbearing references.

If you want more Firefly then get this book

This book IS Firefly, it just is. Not only is it canon to the world of Firefly, but the story, tone, characterization, and everything else are done in such a way that it could have been written by Joss himself.
