Description

From the wickedly funny and feminist creator and host of the Throwing Shade podcast, a collection of hilarious personal essays and political commentary perfect for fans of Lindy West and Roxane Gay.

Since women earned the right to vote a little less than 100 years ago, our progress hasn't been the Olympic sprint toward gender equality first-wave feminists hoped for, but more of a slow, elderly mall walk (with frequent stops to Cinnabon) over the 400 million hurdles we still face. Some of these obstacles are obvious - unequal pay, underrepresentation in government, reproductive restrictions, lack of floor-length mirrors in hotel rooms. But a lot of them are harder to identify. They're the white noise of oppression that we've accepted as lady business as usual, and the patriarchy wants to keep it that way.

Erin Gibson has a singular goal - to create a utopian future where women are recognized as humans. In Feminasty - titled after her nickname on the hit podcast Throwing Shade - she has written a collection of make-you-laugh-until-you-cry essays that expose the hidden rules that make life as a woman unnecessarily hard and deconstructs them in a way that's bold, provocative, and hilarious. Whether it's shaming women for having their periods, allowing them into STEM fields but never treating them like they truly belong, or dictating strict rules for how they should dress in every situation, Erin breaks down the organized chaos of old-fashioned sexism, intentional and otherwise, that systemically keeps women down.

Erin Gibson for president

I was stuck in traffic for many hours and decided to give this listen a go. I did not regret it. Erin Gibson delivers a laugh-out-lout, super-smart and honest book about the wrongs of the patriarchy and everyday discrimination we need to get rid off. Listen to this book, you will never be bored and love all of it. And walk away a little smarter and more empowered.

Delightful Diatribes

I have to admit that, prior to reading this, I did not know of Erin Gibson, and now I am so glad that I do! Although the cover is cheeky, her jokes are searingly funny, and the delivery superb, but Gibson manages to make some depressing AF information not only digestible, but enjoyable.

This is a great “primer” for those who are new to feminism, younger women would do well to get on this, bc they’re the ones who will have to change the world. If it’s still here.

Nailed It

Absolutely amazed how much women’s history research and articles from way back when you discussed. You are my new favorite feminist role model. Keep on kicking the patriarchy in it’s ass Erin!

Ted Talk meets Comedy Show meets Girl’s Night

This is one of those books where you need to listen instead of read for the full experience. I’m not sure whether I loved her pirate Mike Pence voice more or if I loved her North Dakota mall employee voice better.

All I know is I laughed the whole time.

Recommended for everyone who’s pissed Trump is President!

Feminasty is a glorious romp through the mind if Erin Gibson. Rife with humor, personal details, statistics, and righteous rage, Gibson brings her characteristic feminist topical humor to her new book. I’m a long-time fan of Gibson’s work, especially podcast Throwing Shade with Bryan Safi. Some bits were similar to podcasts, but she was able to go into more detail here —- plus, I was happy to hear about those infuriating issues once again. The perfect listen for both laughing and crying on public transit!

The sample should include more of the anti-right hate

I was expecting funny jokes and empowering statements not anti-right anti-Christian anti-male hate speech. This is the kind of stuff that divides people, not empowers women.

Make it stop

I really really wanted to love this! If you are a fan of the author you will probably enjoy it. If you are not familiar with her work, you should google her and listen to some YouTube clips or something before purchasing. I love some raunchy commentary, especially when its pro women issues. Her voice that she used for Pence was so obnoxious, and she screaming into the mike the whole time took away from her actual content which was mostly okay. Her jokes to me landed off and unnatural like she was trying too hard. Overall she's just not my comedic type.

Educational, infuriating, hilarious and important

This book covers everything from STDs to politics to academia. Whilst being hilarious, it covers serious topics with serious criticism but manages to avoid getting too dark and depressing (because those are the times we live in right now) with a good dose of humor and sarcasm (and Gibson doing voices is hilarious as well). While I listened to it, I repeatedly went from frowning to head shaking immediately followed by snorting and laughing. Listen to/ read this book now! It's a must read for feminists, people who are not yet feminists but should be (looking at you Angela Merkel) and fans of Throwing Shade hosted by Erin Gibson and Bryan Safi.
