Description

A refreshingly practical and honest guide that rewrites the script on ADHD

Peter Shankman is a busy guy - a media entrepreneur who runs several businesses, gives keynote speeches around the world, hosts a popular podcast, runs marathons and Iron Mans, is a licensed skydiver, dabbles in angel investing, and is a loving father to his young daughter.

Simply put, he always seems to have more than 24 hours in a day. How does he do it? Peter attributes his unusually high energy level and extreme productivity to his ADHD.

In Faster Than Normal, Shankman shares his hard-won insights and daily hacks for making ADHD a secret weapon for living a full and deeply satisfying life. Both inspiring and practical, the book presents life rules, best practices, and simple but powerful ways to:

  • Harness your creative energy to generate and execute your ideas
  • Direct your hyperfocus to get things done
  • Identify your pitfalls - and avoid them
  • Streamline your daily routine to eliminate distractions
  • Use apps and other tech innovations to free up your time and energy

Filled with ingenious hacks and supportive self-care advice, this is the positive, practical book the ADHD community has long needed - and is also an invaluable handbook for anyone who's sick of feeling overwhelmed and wants to drive their faster-than-normal brain at maximum speed...without crashing.

Critiques

"Peter is a pioneer, an adventurer, an inventor and a seer. His advice is the best kind of advice. It is advice learned in the trenches, in the arena, on the fields of life." (Edward Hallowell, MD, from the foreword, best-selling author of Driven to Distraction)
"Peter Shankman is living proof that living outside the bell-shaped curve, combined with a drive to succeed, can produce amazing results." (Jordan D. Metzl, MD, author of The Exercise Cure)
"While ADHD may be considered a ‘deficit’ to some, Shankman positions it as an attribute within the context of our immediate future. ADHD is a unique gift of creative synthesis that makes sense only inside of the complex digital networks and hyper-stimulation that now defines us." (Amanda Steinberg, CEO, Worth Financial, and author of Worth It)

Good, not great

Let me begin with what worked. There’s a section towards then end of the book where he addresses the dynamic of an ADHD brain in a relationship.

He’s describes the deep desire we have to share ourselves—and the radical spaces we can move through when we reach out to a loved one to share some good news...and they don’t answer the phone.

For the ADHD person—we call, we call again, we text, we think why aren’t they answering, they don’t care about me, it didn’t used to be like this, we used to have the best communication, this isn’t working anymore, maybe we should end our relationship, I’m going to email them now to let them know it’s over.

I found it deeply moving. It was as though someone had lifted the deepest thoughts from my mind—and I got in that moment that maybe, just maybe, I’m not totally insane.

That whole section on relationships is actually quite poignant.

There is a heavy emphasis on building lists, routines and habits. Recognizing that it’s easy to get off track and the more you set yourself up—the better your chances are of winning.

Speaking of winning I did’t know that people with ADHD were fierce competitors and often had a desire to best others. I’ve known that about myself for some time and honestly I just thought that I was a jerk.

As a whole some of the information is very helpful. There are also a number of tips/suggestions that are clearly extraneous filler.

Finally, it should be noted that the author takes every opportunity to interject his personality into the material and that can be distracting at times. While it may not be the book to change your life. It’s certainly worth a listen. If you have ADHD, you’re bound to walk away with insights and some practical things to put into your life.

Hit the nail on the head!!!

Wow! This book was so amazing. The material was right on point and described many of the challenges and opportunities I have faced throughout my life. What’s more it has helped me to no longer be ashamed of my GIFT, but to realize it for what it is and use it to my advantage. There’s definitely still work to do, but Peter, thanks for starting me out on the right path for my bright future.

Describes my life - the gift of ADHD

Loved the book and Peter's narration. Great strategies.

Stories describe my life. As I kept listening more I could relate to the stories.

I applaud Peter for turning ADHD into a gift for himself and had shared his strategies.

Some strategies I had figured out with trials and errors during life, others I test after hearing them in this book.

Once again, thanks Peter for being an inspiration and sharing strategies to help us fellow Faster Than Normal people. :)

Yikes. When does he stop talking about himself?

Initially, I was impressed with Peter, his story and his accomplishments. .... Then he kept talking. And talking.

22 minutes later, he's still talking about himself. At this point, it's moved from his business to how he likes skydiving, The West Wing, and how flight attendants know him as -- the laptop guy-- because he brings a laptop on the plane. As if that's something super special.

(Who doesn't bring their laptop on the plane, Peter?!)

I figure it's an introduction, so I skip the chapter.
Nope - now we're talking about his college experience and his opinions on dorm rooms. Fast forward - we're still talking about Peter.
I skip another chapter - same stuff.

I'm sure eventually he gets into the meat and potatoes of how to use ADHD to your advantage eventually, but 82 minutes of Peter talking about himself was too much for me.

I adored this book!

I thoroughly joyed this book, as a fellow person with ADHD it read seamlessly, and I could really relate to a myriad of the stories and suggestions. I feel a renewed sense about hoping to figure out how organization. I also am looking forward to utilizing new tools such as apps and leaning more on technology to be more productive. Thank you Peter.

Best Audiobook Read - Hands Down!

Peter Shankman: Thank you! I finished this in less than 24 hours and can’t wait to relisten. Being 32 and just finding out that ADHD has been the answer to soooo many baffling questions and pains in my life has been the best thing to ever happen to me and I’ve digested countless books (actually about 6 so far :) in an attempt to figure out “what now”. My therapist has been awesome, but I needed more info - FASTER and you have given me exactly what I needed. I feel understood, self-assured and prepared to test drive this new me and I owe it to you between this book and your podcast! Keep up the amazing work! P.S. your narration is A1 - couldn’t have been more fluid and personable and the tempo was perfect for me as I usually have to speed up 1.5-2 times in other audiobooks. Thanks so much!

Squirrel!!!

Amazingly fun to listen, very well narrated, passionate and relatable.

Out of 5 books so far on Adult ADHD, this was by far the best.

Some of it is still unscientific, but Peter Shankman manages to build a compelling and motivating case that ADHD can be a blessing, and describes how.

mixed topics

Couldn't identify with the content. Seemed to me that the author mixed a lot of topics (giftedness, Adhd, sleep cycle, etc.) and on the other hand skipped some important ones (ADD, comorbidity, etc.).
