Histoire
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

Tony Webster and his clique first met Adrian Finn at school. Sex-hungry and book-hungry, they would navigate the girl-less sixth form together, trading in affectations, in-jokes, rumour, and wit. Maybe Adrian was more serious than the others, certainly more intelligent, but they all swore to stay friends for life. Now Tony is retired. He’s had a career and a single marriage, a calm divorce. He’s certainly never tried to hurt anybody. Memory, though, is imperfect. It can always throw up surprises, as a lawyer’s letter is about to prove.

The Republic of Gilead offers Offred only one function: to breed. If she deviates, she will, like dissenters, be hanged at the wall or sent out to die slowly of radiation sickness. But even a repressive state cannot obliterate desire - neither Offred's nor that of the two men on which her future hangs. Brilliantly conceived and executed, this powerful evocation of 21st-century America gives full rein to Margaret Atwood's devastating irony, wit and astute perception.

Histoire
Innovative, startlingly perceptive and aglow with colour, these 15 stories were written towards the end of Katherine Mansfield's tragically short life. Many are set in the author's native New Zealand, others in England and the French Riviera. All are revelations of the unspoken, half-understood emotions that make up everyday experience - from the blackly comic 'The Daughters of the Late Colonel' and the short, sharp sketch 'Miss Brill', in which a lonely woman's precarious sense of self is brutally destroyed, to the vivid impressionistic evocation of family life in 'At the Bay'.

"Je veux vous expliquer comment une famille, un petit groupe d'êtres, se comporte dans une société, en s'épanouissant pour donner naissance à dix, à vingt individus, qui paraissent, au premier coup d'oeil, profondément dissemblables, mais que l'analyse montre intimement liés les uns aux autres. L'hérédité a ses lois, comme la pesanteur." Emile Zola.

Description
Penguin Classics presents Thomas Hardy's Far From the Madding Crowd, adapted for listening and now available as a digital audiobook as part of the Penguin English Library series. This abridged audio version is read by the actress Julie Christie.
Hardy's powerful novel of swift sexual passion and slow-burning loyalty centres on Bathsheba Everdene, a proud working woman whose life is complicated by three different men - respectable farmer Boldwood, seductive Sergeant Troy, and devoted Gabriel - making her the object of scandal and betrayal.
Vividly portraying the superstitions and traditions of a small rural community, Far from the Madding Crowd shows the precarious position of a woman in a man's world.
Part of a collection of vintage recordings taken from the Penguin Archives, the Penguin British Library series offers affordable, collectable, quality productions that are perfect for on-the-go listening.

Lovely, Romantic Story
I really enjoyed this book. While Bathsheba is not the most sympathetic protagonist in the world, her growth as a character is strong. What I really loved was the steadfast love of Gabriel Oak for her. He is a character worth falling in love with.
The narration by Julie Christie is hypnotic and effective.
It's an excellent story, told extremely well. (I do wish, however, that it was unabridged!)

This is NOT the whole book!
What would have made Far From the Madding Crowd better?
I am sad that I wasted money on this because this is NOT the whole book! I was following along with penguin edition and they would skip paragraphs just to make it shorter. You really miss a lot of the story. I loved Julie Christies voice thou!
What about Julie Christie’s performance did you like?

Great performance by Julie Christy.
She is definitely more than a pretty face from the sixties. I had no idea of Julie Christie's talents as an Audible actress. The story is fairly predictable. I usually find English novels of the Thomas Hardy period too slow to hold my attention. However, this performance is well worth the listening.
