Description

For Francesca Day, it's not the end of her world, but close to it. She's London-bred, wealthy, and sophisticated, but fate leaves her flat broke and stranded on a back road in Texas. Now she's got to deal with reality without her rich girl props. How can she do it?

In Dallas Beaudine, gritty and handsome, lies the answer. He stops his car to help Francesca, whose life needs a tune-up, as well as her car. Stopping could lead to the biggest mistake, or best time, ever.

Fantastic

Wow is all I can say. Not only was the story great but the narrator is the best I have ever experienced. Phillips is a great writer the story hooks you and takes in from the beginning. The narrator does such a great job with voices unlike any I have purchased on Audible. Well worth the price. I loved it so much that I purchased the follow up Lady Be Good too.

Excellent story about flawed characters

on a journey of change. And a feel good ending.

I did not laugh during the book which surprised me since some of her books have me laughing a lot. But it was still an excellent story. I read the paperback a few years ago and recently listened to the audiobook. I enjoyed the audiobook even more than the paperback. The narrator really brought Francesca to life with a British accent. I gave the paperback 4 ½ stars but raised it to 5 stars for the audiobook.

More than half the book shows Francesca doing stupid things. I don’t like it when authors have a smart heroine do stupid things for the sake of the plot. But in this book it worked because the stupidity fit the character. Francesca was spoiled, selfish, vain, careless, and threw temper tantrums. She did stupid things for her pride. For example, she has a little money and then throws a temper tantrum in a motel room throwing and breaking things. So the motel takes her money to cover damages - otherwise she would go to jail. Another example: she has no money for food, but due to pride she says she doesn’t need any help because she has a rich guy waiting for her, which is not true. Then she runs off and ends up in worse trouble.

Eventually Francesca learns, grows, changes, and becomes successful in her career and other. That was so fun to see.

This story is a kind of twist on the theme in Pygmalian (My Fair Lady). In Pygmalian, Eliza is a “good person” who is low class and changes into a proper speaking well mannered lady. In Fancy Pants, Francesca starts out as a proper speaking lady who appears to have good manners. But she is a horrible person and is brought down to low class before she changes to become a “good person.”

Dallie had awful problems and he refused to deal with them. But he eventually changed. I liked how that happened and his motivations.

AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR:
Anna Fields did an excellent job. She had an excellent British voice for Francesca and a good southern voice for Dallie.

AMAZING!

this was such an AMAZING BOOK ! SEP and the late Anna Fields so far keep impressing me. This story in particular was so rich and deep , exploring human survival and fears. And I love it when there is a child in the story. Just touches your heart!

No redeemable qualities.

Spoiled, vain, narcissistic, rich girl falls in love with an emotionally detached, sexist, hound dog that has no qualms about slapping her around.
The book focuses on everyone's relationships EXCEPT the main characters. I would be surprised if 20% of the whole book was dedicated to the main subjects and it spent a great deal of that time showing only their bad qualities.
I have read all of SEP other books and can honestly say this one has no redeemable qualities unlike her other books.

Every thing SEP's writes is great! Wit charm amusing plot with the verbal skills that has the power to evoke OUT LOUD laughter.
The reader: Our own beloved Anna Fields cannot be topped. Every book Anna narrates is superior.
her timing and ability to add the different voices, makes each and everyone a hit. What a talent. I miss her.

Unlikable Main Character

I love SEP books and hate to see them end but this was not one of them. Francesca is such an unlikable main character, actually she was very irritating. Worst I wasted 2 credits on this book.

Fantastic Narration

I like Susan Elizabeth Phillips books but there is no better narration then the one by Anna Fields. All characters have a voice of their own and it is a lot of fun listening to this book.

Too wordy

I would have to agree with the other review that stated that in this book she goes into too much detail about the characters and their families. The concept was a great story but waivered too much from where it needed to be.

I am usually very easy on books and am not critical but on this book I agree with the criticism.

More than I expected!

I just listened to this for the second time. I had forgotten how much I loved it. There is a large cast of well-developed characters and I want to get to know most of them better. This is the book that got me hooked on Susan Elizabeth Phillips!

A Classic story, full of heart and humor

This is a classic from SEP, narrated superbly by the very missed and talented Anna Fields. If someone isn't familar with SEP books, this wouldn't be my choice for them to read for the first book. One of her more recently stories...or any from the Chicago Stars series would be a better choice. But this is an incredibly written book, and manages to engage modern readers even though it was clearly written 30 years ago when relationships between men and women were so different. For me, it adds an interesting layer...to see how much has changed...and how much hasn't. It's a great story covers a lot of years. It's funny, but also deeply emotional as two very broken people learn what's important and how to love each other... and maybe themselves as well.

Anfang etwas träge, dann super

Zuerst kam die Geschichte nicht so recht in Schwung, ab der Mitte etwa wurde es dann super :-)
