Dale and Connie Jakes, working for the FBI, provide a firsthand account of life under the deepest cover inside the violent, armed strongholds of the Montana Freemen organization. In 1995, the Jakes lived in the Montana mountains, discovering a major center of American terrorism. They exposed vital information about how widespread, well-organized, coordinated, and dangerous militia groups have become. The Freeman were eventually arrested after an 81-day standoff with the FBI— the longest in U.S. law-enforcement history.

This disturbing memoir provides a subtly scathing commentary on the FBI and also reveals a detailed view of a top-secret undercover operation and the extreme risks, dangers, and courage it requires.
