Description

In this revised best-selling audiobook, Peter Scazzero outlines a road map for discipleship with Jesus that is powerfully transformative. He unveils what's wrong with our current definition of "spiritual growth" and offers not only a model of spirituality that actually works, but seven steps to change that will help you experience authentic faith and hunger for God.

Peter Scazzero learned the hard way: You can't be spiritually mature while remaining emotionally immature. Even though he was the pastor of a growing church, he did what most people do:

  • Avoid conflict in the name of Christianity
  • Ignore his anger, sadness, and fear
  • Use God to run from God
  • Live without boundaries

Eventually God awakened him to a biblical integration of emotional health and the spiritual practice of slowing down and quieting your life for to experience a firsthand relationship with Jesus. It created nothing short of a spiritual revolution in Scazzero, in his church, and now, in thousands of other churches.

In this updated edition, Scazzero shares new stories and principles as he outlines his journey and the signs of emotionally unhealthy spirituality. Then he provides seven biblical, reality-tested ways to break through to the revolutionary life Christ meant for you.

Quote/end quote

The amount of times the narrator says "quote" and "end quote" is enough to drive you bananas!! VERY distracting!

Great content, read it on paper instead

This is the missing manual for modern American Christianity. It breaks through the chains of false identity placed on primarily rural, conservative Christians and explains how spiritual maturity and emotional health are inseparable.

You can't love your neighbor if you can't break through your emotional and relational baggage to actually love well.

That said, I'd recommend the paperback version of this content for two reasons:
1. You will probably want to easily refer back to certain lists and major points.
2. The author and reader has a persistent narrative tick: he actually enunciates every single question mark in the entire book as "quote" ... "end quote", instead of simply narrating each quoted phrase with the appropriate nuance. That no one caught and coached him on this during the recording process can only mean that it was an intentional aspect of the material: you have reached emotionally healthy spirituality when you no longer want to strangle the speaker for saying "quote" ... "end quote" over. and over. and over. and over again. ;-P

quote-endquote

I loved the content for sure, but the constant "quote, end-quote" was distracting. Otherwise, a good book.

Great but The chapters are not all in order

Fortunately I have read part of the paperback copy. This audible version chapter outline is not the same. It appears that some of the chapters are mixed up and according to the list chapter 2 is not chapter 2 chapter 5 starts chapter 2 etc.. Now the overall message is 100% helpful it is a little challenging when you expect the chapters to be in order.

Too many “QUOTES AND END QUOTES”!

Book is well written and is very relevant to our walks with God today. However, when he reads the book he finds it necessary to actually say “quote and end quote” EVERY TIME it’s used. I found it extremely distracting and am sure others did as well. Perhaps, if he either didn’t use as many quotes or didn’t actually say quote/end quote each time, it would be better.

Highly Recommended

This book provided great insight and lessons in applying God's word to my emotional health and spirituality. It has challenged by theological perspective and addressed areas of concern regarding my emotions. It has become a part of my life plan.

Good, but . . . .

Is there anything you would change about this book?

There are a few things that I disagreed with based on his usage of Scripture in the Sabbath chapter.

What did you like best about this story?

I enjoyed the practical nature with which he was able to bring each of the issues presented to life.

Which character – as performed by Peter Scazzero – was your favorite?

There was no favorite character, but I did enjoy the authenticity of his wife.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

I'm not sure how good of a movie it would be, but it would be interesting.

Life-changing

This book is a practical road map that includes ideas and tasks to take your life to the next level. To heal old emotional wounds, to forgive, to be forgiven. It discusses how to pray and just provides practical ways to transform your life. Narrated by the author who sounds very authentic and honest. And the New Yawk accent is kinda funny too.

Groundbreaking and uprooting.

Great content to help someone come to God with their “whole” heart and experiencing Jesus.

My only complaint is that the audio chapter did not line up with the book.
