    Description

Jakkin, a 15-year-old bond boy, works with many others in Sarkkhan's worm farm/nursery on the desert planet Austar IV. Jakkin plans to steal a baby dragon from the farm to raise, hoping to train the dragon to fight and earn him enough money to buy himself out of bond, as well as the dragon's freedom.

Eventually, with the help of Akki, a girl at the nursery, he succeeds and names his dragon Heart's Blood. After a year of training and growing, Akki arranges a way for Jakkin and his beautiful red dragon to engage in their first battle.

A classic, but not appropriate for all ages...

This book was a childhood favorite of mine -- but in retrospect, reading it as an adult, I realize this probably might not be the sort of book which should (as it was in my childhood) be recommended to 8 year-olds. There's a lot about love, ambition, responsibility and loyalty -- as well as learning to both love and take delight in the accomplishments of others. Excellent lessons for children who hope to have pets, as well as for later in life when it's time for them to raise children of their own. But there's some pretty graphic violence and a few frank discussions of sexual activities that...made me pause when I thought about recommending it to a child i know. Read this for yourself and decide how you feel about loaning it to children. For my part, I'll be moving on to the rest of the series again! The reader is good, but not exceptional -- speeding it up to 1.5x or 2x might also help.

    Fond memories

I first read this book when I was in middle school almost 30 years ago.. which is odd considering it occasionally talks about "baggeries". This is the book that ignited my love of reading. It holds a special place in my heart. Give it a try, you wont regret it.

One of the first books I ever read

I found this book when I was a freshman in high school over 30 years ago. At the time I found the 2 others and really enjoyed them. Over the years I tried from time to time to find the books again and I could only find the first 2 to add to my collection. On a whim, I checked Audible and found there was a 4th book!!! I can't wait to go through all of them again. It has been over 20 years since I read them and want to enjoy the FULL story this time from start to finish.

    A bit nostalgic for me

I remember reading this as a child, not in school but as a book I myself grabbed from a book store. There were many things I remembered and a good amount I had not. Thought I would see how I felt about it now as an adult. I still find the book enjoyable. I see now as a child, I missed all these seemingly adult references that I get and understand now and that made me laugh a little bit. I also had no memory of the dragon fights. They put them against each other and placed bets pretty much.

Fond memories of reading this book years ago

I love it when a book or movie or play or a place is as good now as I remembered it and this book does. (I shouldn't be surprised, Jane Yolan wrote it.) It also brings back memories of the time when I first read it.

I think this is the book that convinced me dragons were cooler than dinosaurs and I was going to be a paleontologist when I grew up (I decided in first grade). I didn't realize how much this book shaped my inner world until I listened to Audible's copy. In my imagination I didn't have a dragon, I WAS a dragon, a red and gold one. The dragon in the book was a dark red, but Sarkkan's colors were red and gold. Like a cat, Jakken's dragon washed herself, but with a rough tongue and fire. I grew up with a cat and as a child sometimes pretended to be a cat, but when I imagined being a dragon, in my mind's eye, I cleaned my scales with fire. All these things I remember from my playing years ago, but now I know where I got the seeds of my imagination play.

A unique take on "The Boy And His Dragon" Story

I first discovered this dragon's blood from an old animation I saw as a kid by the same name. it's funny to see how close to the source material that old cartoon was.

I know Dragon's Blood predates how to train your dragon by several decades but there are some interesting comparisons and I find that this story is a way more in depth view into the relationship between the main character and his dragon.

    Very good narration as well.

    First book super sexist

could have been just the first book and I know the girl was portrayed as hating the sexism so I bet it might change but this book was just way to sexist for me to handle.

it kept me on the edge of my seat.

I loved this book the first time I read it and I still love it. The characters are rounded, and the world is full of depth to me. an A+ read in my books.
