Description

"Dracula" is an 1897 Gothic horror novel by Irish author Bram Stoker. Famous for introducing the character of the vampire Count Dracula, the novel tells the story of Dracula's attempt to move from Transylvania to England so he may find new blood and spread undead curse, and the battle between Dracula and a small group of men and women led by Professor Abraham Van Helsing.

Dracula has been assigned to many literary genres including vampire literature, horror fiction, the gothic novel and invasion literature. The novel touches on themes such as the role of women in Victorian culture, sexual conventions, immigration, colonialism, and post-colonialism. Although Stoker did not invent the vampire, he defined its modern form, and the novel has spawned numerous theatrical, film and television interpretations.

It has aged, and it tells

The story is a very solid one, even in this original version it has a beautiful first couple of chapters with suspense and keeps your attention . But from the middle onward it sags , is it because of its paternalistic tone, sometimes even covert misogynistic undertone? Also their are times you wish the Count would bite some sense in some of the male 'heroes'.
I loved Claire Walsh her performance in 'Oliver Twist' this is just a bit less, but the voice was clear, and easy to understand.

Lifeless Reading Made Me Abandon Halfway Through

This purchase confirmed the aphorism “you get what you pay for.” I paid only $.82 for this audiobook, so I guess I am entitled to only 82-cent’s-worth of opinion. The opening of the story is very engaging. However, I found it difficult to maintain interest because of the utterly lifeless reading by the narrator. I would like to try listening to the story again with a much better narrator.

Gave me real chills and kept awake all night

The story's plot was amazingly good and the way Bram wrote was exceptional. Each character had massive roles to play. The style of writing of Bram's by telling the whole story with each character's journey entries was something new for me to enjoy.

I felt true emotions during the read, or listen. How Lucy died was a really terrible incident. Also, the sad death of other heroic characters like Mr. Morris was also unfortunate. But the horrors of the story was undoubtedly real. The novel had mystery, suspense, action, adventure, horror, and whatnot. Everything you'd expect from an iconic horror novel that modernized the "vampire" thing. I'd really recommend it to anyone willing to dive deep in old horror worlds.

Interesting and different than the movies.

This was interesting and different than the movies, but still very much a horror story. In fact I thought it held more horror than most versions because a persons very soul was on the line.
I was surprised at how much belief in God was evident in this book. And I think it was correct in some of the errors brought about by too much faith in 'science.'
It is definitely not a book for children. But I would recommend it for adults who like horror and those who are interested in seeing some of the foundations of modern society. Also, I would recommend it to anyone who wants to be well read.
