Description
"Another Christian renounces the church and Christ." "Former Christian music star turns her back on faith." "I kissed Christianity goodbye." Headlines like these are becoming common. It seems like the most popular trend in faith circles lately is to deconstruct, then deconvert.
Joshua Porter knows that story from the inside out. He was raised in the tangles of American evangelical Christianity, and the church he knew was conservative, fundamentalist, and politicized. It feared culture, music, art, Dungeons & Dragons, Harry Potter, and anything else that was slightly suspect. This foundation of dread and fear was full of holes he nearly fell through . . . and out of faith altogether.
His story put him on the road to deconversion—but that isn't where he ended up. Despite his years of being surrounded by disaffected former Christians and living large in the punk rock lifestyle, Porter now finds his faith closer to the historic Christian tradition than ever.
This book is more than Porter's own story. It also invites those who may be in the deconstruction process themselves to consider the perspective of someone who was tempted to leave his faith—yet stayed. And it provides theological insight and pastoral support to those who worry that everyone is bailing out on the church.

Great for anyone at any level of faith
Really helpful view of deconstruction that acknowledges legitimate concerns, but points to a healthy way forward.

A moving and remarkable gift to take in
To know and to be aware of the story being told here, fills me with such a sense of admiration and gratitude for Josh. To be humbled by the writing talent, and to feel so possessed by the exacting imagery of the human experience - as well as the painfully honest truisms about following Christ in a post-Christian culture. Many parts of the story I knew, because they were my own. Others were curious and unfamiliar, but all of them helped in the process of seeing a larger picture of discipleship that makes me desire more than ever, to be a loyal companion of Jesus. Like many interlocking modules, the mosaic of subject matter layers itself back and forth across theology, biography, cultural commentary, and poetic allegory. I kept feeling a deep sense of… nostalgia. I do not know why. In some small part, I suspect that it is because of my certainty that D2D will likely never see the wide-scale publication that justice would see sufficient. That, even if ten thousand people were to read it, they would still be a fraction of those that need to hear this brilliant, profoundly tender, and bitterly concise autopsy of American Christianity. Of the high cost and unimaginably beautiful reward of apprenticeship.
I’m going to gift it to as many friends and family as I can though! Thank you, Josh. God bless you.

Beautiful
As a Christian and a pastor this book was incredibly helpful to my heart and to helping me see and own my own struggles with GOD so that I can be healthier with HIM. That, in turn, makes me more able to “hear” the hearts of the people I am caring for so that I can love them where they are and point them to the long journey with the Master instead of the easy road of death.
Thank you Josh! Thank you for being obedient to GOD in writing this book. This was truly a gift to me.

Everyone Should Read/Listen to this Book
Joshua Porter gets to the depths of what the Church has been needing and what the world is truly thirsty for: faithfulness to Jesus. Through funny and dark stories coupled with biblically sounds doctrine, Porter calls the Church to a deeper relationship with Christ and holds the prevailing culture's "good life" up against the rich and satisfying life found in orthodoxy.
This book is worth your time.

"Faithfulness as an act of rebellion"
Laser-focused on the topics we as Millennials (or Xennials) wrestle with in this walk of faith, Josh speaks with honesty and clarity, pulling no punches and stroking no egos. The allegory of "The Apprentice' in this book is a beautifully apt mirror image of Josh's deconstruction story. we thank God for Josh, his family, his work, his talents, and the work that God will do through this book as more of us are invited to partner in the rebellion of faithfulness to Jesus and apprenticeshipto Him. This is The Way. (sorry, Mando)

The best book of its kind
In a world overloaded with modern Christian books, this one stands out. Heard the author on a podcast and loved his responses, so I downloaded the book. So glad I did!
Orthodoxy is the ultimate rebellion against the self, the world, the devil.

Where to go next for those who are deconstructing
Josh’s story resonates so much with me. From the legalism of growing up in southern Christianity, to feeling like an outcast for being the awkward punk kid in church. All of that culminated into what Josh describes in this book.
For anyone who never had the chance to own their faith for themselves and has experienced turmoil because of it, this book tells you not to give in or give up. It challenges you to know the true Jesus. Not the safe Jesus or tolerant Jesus. The Jesus that asks us to pick up our cross everyday and follow Him.

A MUST read for today’s Christian
The ‘Deconstruction’ movement is gaining ground in Christian young adults (age and maturity) across the nation. Josh’s experience and story telling expose the lies and dangers of such a movement. He then builds a Biblical foundation for those of us who have experienced doubts and frustration towards God and His Church to see the consequences of this path, reflection of heart postures, and encouragement to remain faithful. For those who have not been tempted to ‘deconstruct’, this book is beneficial to understand and help walk along side those who are in this process.
Thank you Josh for your courage and faithfulness to share your story. We are all better for it!
