follows Luca Ciotti, a child survivor of the 1919 Great Boston Molasses Flood, who dares to speak out
against greedy powerhouses to avenge his sister’s death. His testimony becomes a spark that
ultimately contributes to the creation of modern workplace protections, now known as OSHA
(Occupational Safety and Health Administration).
Luca never expects a beautiful winter morning to become a fight for his life. When the molasses tank
bursts, the deadly wave tears through his neighborhood, destroying homes, businesses, and people he
loves. He summons the courage to speak out against the powerful company, Purity Distilling Company,
responsible for the disaster. His testimony takes him from the streets of the North End of the Boston
Harbor to the courtroom where his voice becomes an unexpected force for change.
As Luca confronts grief, prejudice, and powerful adults who would rather keep the truth hidden, he
discovers that even the smallest voice can make a difference. His story of resilience, courage, family,
and justice offers a compelling window into the immigrant experience and the struggle for safer working
conditions.
Inspired by actual events, Death By Molasses brings a little known American tragedy to life through the
eyes of a young survivor who refuses to remain silent.
