Description

David Hume (1711-1776) represented the culmination of the British philosophy of sense-experience. Although he lived in the age of reason, Hume had profound doubts about our ability to know anything in the world with certainty. This skepticism colored his view of science and gave rise to his devastating attack on proofs of the existence of God. Hume believed that values are neither objective nor universal, but nevertheless was optimistic about human nature and our ability to achieve decency in our actions.

The Giants of Philosophy is a series of dramatic presentations, in understandable language, of the concerns, questions, interests, and overall world view of history's greatest philosophers. Special emphasis on clear and relevant explanations gives you a new arsenal of insights toward living a better life.

Heston saves it

What did you like best about David Hume? What did you like least?

Good introduction to Hume. Short and easy to digest.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Heston does a great job. The guy doing the fake Scottish accent of the Hume quotes is irritating at best and confusing at worst (because you can't help listen more to his accent than the content).

Heston delivers

Charlton Heston does a great job of narrating. Quotes are delivered by great voice actors using the accent of the historical figure being quoted.

This book delivers exactly what it promises.

You had me at Charlton Heston

While the narrator speaks for himself 😏 the book leaves much to the imagination. I would have liked it better if they spent more time on his actual philosophies, teachings and writings than his popularity or lack there of. However, it does do a good job of summarizing Hume’s trials and tribulations. His influences and those he influenced. His portly size and philandering. All-in-all, it’s an entertaining and informative read/listen.

Easy Intro to a Complex Thinker

Unfortunately, Hume has been over-simplified by interpreters. This book does a good job avoiding that trend, and it tries to show how complex Hume is. But the author never forgets the audience, as it is easy to understand. I also liked the different voices to represent different people.

Hume for almost everyone

David Hume is one of the most important philosophers and this work does him justice. A good introduction to Hume's writings and his life.
