Description

They bought her body, not her silence.

A desperate stripper. A secluded manor owned by three billionaires. And a savage evil sheltered deep within its luxurious walls.

When Pearl accepts a $100,000 paycheck to work as a Fox at a members-only gentleman's club, she's excited to start. In 30 days, she'd be debt free with enough money to begin a new life. But on arrival, her possessions and identity are unexpectedly stripped and she's denied contact with the outside world.

Pearl discovers that Foxes often disappear once their contracts have expired. The arrival of an undercover cop only serves to prove that nothing is as it seems at the Fox pit.

Can Pearl escape the treacherous manor in time, or has this evil ground already claimed its next victim?

If you like disturbing, riveting psychological thrillers then you'll be mesmerized by Dark Rapture.

3.5* - mis-categorized on Amazon

According to the 'Product Details' portion of the Amazon page for this book, Dark Rapture is categorized as:
#635 in Books > Teens > Science Fiction & Fantasy > Science Fiction > Time Travel
#750 in Books > Audible Audiobooks > Fiction & Literature > Horror
#1196 in Books > Audible Audiobooks > Romance > Suspense

Ooookay. Not sure how this book fits into any of these three categories. Let's be clear - it's a thriller/suspense story in the BDSM/erotica category. Mis-categorizing this book is one (but not the only) reason why the reviews are mixed. Readers/listeners form an expectation based on book information and when those expectations aren't met, this dissonance tends to be reflected in the reviews.

As other reviewers have noted, this books skews heavily towards erotica for most of the story, with the suspense-thriller plot ramping up in the latter portion of the book. So, if you're more interested in the dark suspense aspects of the story, you'll need patience and a willingness to get immersed into Pearl's experiences and her journey (it's a long journey, covering over 30 hours of audiobook). Also as other reviewers have noted, the ending gets a bit surreal and may require some re-reading to absorb. Could it have been a shorter book? Definitely. But any reader who purchases a book that is this long should reasonably be willing to invest the time so that they can become immersed in the story. Given the genre, it's not necessarily a pleasant immersion, but it certainly helps us appreciate Pearl's condition by the time the final scenes arrive. I don't regret investing that time.

I really liked the narrator's voice. Subjectively speaking, I prefer female narrators with alto voices (versus soprano voices) and Ms. Cyr's voice is authentically Pearl. I didn't enjoy all of her male voices, though, which is why I dropped a star for the narration rating. Also, I sped up the playback speed slightly - it reduced the overall playback time and the pace flowed a bit better (my opinion). I'd absolutely listen to another audiobook by this author or this narrator in the future.

Good Erotica First Half, But The Rest Not So Much

This story is mostly erotica with some mystery and some paranormal. The story had a good flow for the first half and then went totally off the rails. The book dragged on as if the author wasn't sure where they were headed in the plot and then the last 10 hours of the book was bizarre. I had a hard time keeping up with all the changes in the character’s name and what was real or not real. It really should be split into three books.

I also found the ending to be totally ridiculous and it really minimized the trauma that Pearl endured. I think the author played it too safe with the ending. Seriously, I doubt a sex slave would be all ready to jump back in the sack after what she went through.

I really think the author needs to decide who their audience is. If its women, then he should learn what turns women on with erotica. All of the "liquidy" descriptions were cringy and geared for men. On a somewhat positive there were some hot sex scenes minus all the “liquidy” descriptions.

The narrator was ok but slurring in some parts and not when the character was intoxicated. The only voice male voice I liked was Tanner.

Overall, it was too long and too confusing. If you like erotica, you will probably enjoy the first half of the book before it goes off into crazy town.

Do not read this book alone at night

A disturbing Book for a disturbing era........ well what is more disturbing then having Donald Trump as President ?

It takes awhile to heat up but it gets very very hot.

The Narrator does a great job working with difficult material to bring this strange story to the listener.

To those who enjoy this genre it is a creative and interesting experience.

Amazing Book! Couldn't stop listening!!

Great narrator, great book with details that really made the imagination go wild and it was something that I didn't expect to really enjoy as I am not one for these, but took a chance that the thriller part I seeked would outweight any of the other but in actuality this book made me so consumed because it was all kind of different from the norm. Loved it. Take the chance you wont be disappointed!

Not a Book for Everyone...

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This book was not necessarily what I had expected. I must say that I found it disturbing at times and pretty degrading to the female characters. The male ones were not treated much better I must say. They were either narcissistic or without a backbone. The sad part is that somewhere this type of environment is probably real.
So Pearl is in dire need of funds. The reason for this need is not really explained though. We just know that she needs money and she has few skills to earn them. A pole dancer in a second rate club apparently will not allow her to improve her financial status. As a consequence she accepts a job that is, to say the least, suspicious from the start. Then comes a looooong stretch of sadistic erotica scenes. I don't think it needed to be that long if the book is ultimately supposed to be a mystery. You get the idea of what's going on in this private club right from the start. I found some of the scenes pretty disturbing as I mentioned, but I stuck to the book to see where it lead at the end. That's when the mystery truly developed, but even then it got somewhat confusing, with supernatural aspects that were not easy to grasp. I feel that some people might enjoy this long saga so I did give it a favorable review, but just be warned that violence, sex depravation, and lots and lots of blood are widely present throughout the narration.
The narrator did a great job with the female characters giving them the appropriate personalities, though I did find some of them a little whiny. The male characters' voices sounded a little forced, but then there were quite a few of them. Hard to come up with different voices for all of them.

Dark Rapture

Very good storyline lotta twist and turn. you didn’t know who is a good person or a bad person. It’s about a young girl trying to get ahead she’s offered a chance to earn a lot of money. It’s like what they say something sounds good but it turns out to be completely different.

Twisted

You agree to have sex at a private, invite only club to get out of debt.... You had no idea there was something more sinister going on. This tale was gripping and it had lots of twists. If you like BDSM, you're going to enjoy listening to this story. It definitely has some "bedroom" scenes. If you're not into that, don't get this book. If you enjoy them and like a good kind of mystery, you'll probably really like this book.

NOT A THRILLER; THIS IS PORNOGRAPHY

I am no prude, and I have tried to listen to this "thriller" for a few hours but I cannot continue. Rapture reads like a Letter to Penthouse, mixed in with some of the worst stereotypes put forth by Hustler Magazine, Playboy, and the porn industry in general. All the women are flawlessly beautiful and complete, utterly submissive nymphomaniacs. All the men have perfect, ripped bodies, huge penises, and immaculate wardrobes and personal hygiene. No one is an actual human being that a reader could identify with and I suppose that's the whole point of pornography. Pearl can't decided if she likes having sex with complete strangers or not, is not sure if she's totally into being spanked and humiliated, and in real life would have contracted herpes, genital warts, HIV, or crabs by now. Perhaps I am biased, having been raised by a loving mother, but the image of women in this, uh, "book" is utterly twisted and demeaning. I would be surprised if Logan Fox (definitely not their real name--google it and try to locate an actual human being with a face) is a woman: this is hard-core porn written by a man, for men, and features women purely as expendable vessels for male ejaculate and domination. Coyly touting Rapture as "a disturbing psychological thriller" is like saying "Platoon" is "a fun 'n quirky war flick." I am shocked that Audible, a company I have trusted for four years, would not take the time to categorize this properly as: "Disturbing Erotic Thriller in which Women are Senselessly and Repeatedly Demeaned by Cruel, Rich & Stupid Men," or "Hard-Core Pornography, brought to you by Hustler Magazine," or "Pearl Sort of Agrees to Non-Stop Sexual Humiliation for Entire Novel." Rapture is NOT a thriller and I ask that Audible place it in a more honest category. By the way, my definition of pornography is as follows: picture your son or daughter performing the acts, then ask yourself if you're still cool with those acts. Are they safe? Will they still retain their sense of dignity and self afterwards? Did they fully understand the consequences of the acts they participated in? If your answers to any of the above are "no," then it is pornography, because every "performer" WAS someone's son or daughter before they became a sex object. I will be very interested to see if Audible/Amazon actually posts this. And yes, I would like my credit back, please.

this was more of 50 Shades of Grey than a suspense

this was more of 50 Shades of Grey than a suspense thriller, not for me.
