Description

A Warhammer 40,000 novel

Intent on rebuilding Ultramar, the returned primarch Roboute Guilliman wages war on the treacherous Death Guard - but as he battles his corrupted brother, the intervention of a greater power threatens all he works for.

Listen to it because:

The story of the resurrected Ultramarines primarch continues and brings him face to face - and sword to scythe - with Mortarion....

The story:

In the void and upon the worlds of Greater Ultramar, the battle for the Imperium continues. Intent on rebuilding his home realm and using it as base to reconstruct the ravaged stellar empire of mankind, the returned primarch Roboute Guilliman proceeds with his war to drive Mortarion and his Death Guard Traitor Legion from the domain of the Ultramarines. But when Guilliman brings his brother to battle upon the diseased plains of Parmenio, the intervention of a greater power in their fraternal struggle threatens to upend the Imperial Regent’s understanding of the galaxy and his place within it. Primarchs and ideologies clash in this second, thrilling part of the Dark Imperium trilogy.

Written by Guy Haley. Narrated by John Banks.

Inconsistent volume

Volume inconsistent. Especially Nurgle demon's talk was extremely loud. Some parts like the child saint was extremely quiet.

important, good but not great

the reader, John Banks, it's not my favorite reader of the black Library set of options. he misses the tone often when the author specifically States that the character spoke in a particular fashion, thanks will not represent that in the line which he is delivering. Sometimes I just work some, most of the time it works out all right anyway.

Haley is one of the better commonly employed writers for black Library. this book does a good job of bringing the Stories full circle within the overarching novel, but certain threads were clearly teased out a little bit too long.

some of the threads dealing with the plague God and his minions just could not end soon enough, they became tedious.

I have noticed some authors showing a difficulty to represent the opposite sex as fully a character has their own sex. Unfortunately, I think this sometimes takes place with Haley. Not often, but on some occasions it does.

now that I have said everything negative, let's get to the positives.

I said that the book was essential, and the total course of events that the novel includes is certainly essential course of events. if a reader were to skip this novel, there would be a very significant hole in the understanding of the lore of the 42nd millennium.

Haley's flaws that I mentioned above are outnumbered by his merits. Haley makes characters able to be felt through their descriptions and their words.

it seems as though black library has not held guy Haley to a specific chapter, or topic, or character, but they appear to allow him to apply his skills to novels that move the story forward. This is good because Haley does a good job of making the Warhammer 40K world stay consistent and come to life between the table top and the pages of fiction.

not every black Library author accomplishes this. Some authors, even some that seem to be lauded, like Aaron dembski-bowden, manage to work their lack of life experience and ignorance of the Canon of the lore of Warhammer 40K into fiction novels in such a way as to make the novels marginalized in the eyes of fans that actually pay attention.

Guy Haley rights in accordance with Canon. He writes well. He writes in such a way that you can follow his understanding of what is taking place.

although Guy Haley's writing should not be considered formulaic, it is sometimes certainly predictable. to be fair however, in the "grim darkness of the far future", the lowered anxiety of a little predictability is appreciated on occasion.

guy Haley writes the primarch roboute guilliman well. He also has a good handle on mortarion and his internal struggles. having read recently novels which focused on mortarion, the translation from a different author to Haley has been seamless. Haley took the tone and feeling of the characters and brought them through in a true fashion.

a final compliment is that guy Haley does a marvelous job providing a sensory experience for the reader, one which the character is in his story are placed. you can taste the actinic quality in the air. the foul sweetness of Decay fills your nostrils. the uncomforting slosh and give of the earth beneath your feet in the mud seems to be felt as you are reading or listening.

I look forward to his next book.

performance problems

I could not get into this story. one of the biggest problems is with the performer. he goes from screeching and loud, to whispering through the story, causing me to constantly adjust my radio volume instead of passing attention to the story.

Makes me want to paint again

I stopped painting Citadel miniatures for a while now. I didn’t have the time and it got too expensive. But, somehow these books hooked me. The 41st millennium feels fresh again.

kitsch

awful cockney accented demons and repetitive nurgle "gross-out" moments. read lords of silence instead. no character sees any meaningful development but Guilliman. you could read the last chapter and epilogue and gain every bit of lore, the previous chapters are literally pointless.

Good book

I really liked this one. But I grew a little tired of the description of every nurgling and plague anything description. After dark imperium, I understand. They're disgusting. Other than that, fantastic work, though.

Great book and acting, terrible sound mix

This is a fantastic book full of important insights and events. It's also well acted. The huge downside is the difference in volume, especially battle cries and the musings of Nurgle's legions.

Gerade so annehmbarer zweiter Teil

Good book

The book is good. Really enjoyed it. Narrator overall good just the volume difference between character voices too much. From barely audible to ear shatteringly loud in moments.

Weak Plat armor in between

All in all it was a really good sequal for dark imperium BUT in between there was about 1 hour of weaker parts but if you can get through that it has a great ending
