Description

Two centuries ago, the Imperium of Man and the upstart Tau Empire fought to a standstill in the Damocles Gulf.

Now, as the 41st millennium draws to a close, the tau have returned. As the world of Agrellan falls under attack, the White Scars and Raven Guard rush to its defence, but with the skilled Commander Shadowsun leading the alien forces, the Space Marines and their allies are hard pressed. Kor'sarro Khan, Huntmaster of the White Scars, swears that he will win the day in the most direct way possible - by taking Shadowsun's head.

I love the Tau but...

A few spoilers ahead.

Overall it was good. The narrator is really good, but some of the story was... not right. Not in a canon way, I'm not a 40K expert. But like why where the tau constantly caught in close combat? Why did the 2 war leaders constantly fall for each other's traps when they knew each other were always setting traps? Why did shadowsun seem incompetent when she's the leader of the entire 3rd sphere expansion?

I get that there would not be much to write about if the tau did what they do and just smear the enemy from a mile away, but everyone just seemed incompetent at times and it took a lot away from an otherwise great few stories.

Pretty Decent

White scars were portrayed as more inept, which got on my nerves, but good book.

entertaining warhammer fun

It's good. There are better stories out there and I agree with some of the reviews here stating that the series bashes the White Scars a bit. The Khan is a centuries old veteran and master hunter and he seems to make some idiotic choices. Same with Shadowsun. Two legendary commanders acting like fools didn't make for a compelling story at times but otherwise I enjoyed it. If you like Warhammer generally you should enjoy it but if you know most of the main characters more than the average bear then you may not really enjoy their narrative arcs.

Another great clash of two mighty factions.

It's four stories rolled into one fallowing multiple perspectives. Once more the writers have shown that they can show both sides of a fight and make both sympathetic. Shows that they're are no true good or bad people in the 40k timeline (Save Erebus). Each faction also gets a chance to shine in the story. Fan of the franchise, check it out. Minor nitpick, they don't cover the event that I thought they would. Not really a spoiler, but takes place before it. Fans will know what I'm talking about.

Best story was Broken sword.

Broken sword is amazing and one of the best 40k stories out there. If all stories would be like this emotional rollercoaster, this book had potential to get 5 stars. But other stories were only little over avarage, so book gets only 4 stars from me.

40k shorts that follow up Blades of Damocles well

4 related stories by 4 separate authors mesh nicely together in Damocles. Doesn't compare to a full novel in quality, but the assortment of perspectives and styles of storytelling has it's merit.

Love the distinct voices. This collection has quite a bit to offer on the Tau.

War in many ways

A 4 story anthology, Damocles tells the stories of the white scars, imperial defectors to the Tau, and the mind games one plays in the Warhammer 40,000 world.

All the authors did an incredible job

nicely interwoven stories

The several stories interact nicely, as they are solid stand alone stories that interact only so slightly. It is as well conveys the solid moral grey of W40k, there is no real hero nor villian in all of this. Worth a listen/read

Decent, if at some times generic

This audiobook showed an interesting portrayal of the Tau Empire. It focusses partly on how the Imperium manages to frequently lose systems to the far younger Tau Empire and features moments of characterful, interesting portrayal of Space Marines, something that many authors struggle with. One or two of the short stories though, focus (in my opinion) too heavily on combat and lack some of the story and character development found in the others.
