If that isn't bad enough, after a week of investigating, the local police appear to be stumped. Terrified about a second case going cold in town, Sabrina decides to take matters into her own hands. She sets out on her own, determined not to give up until she has brought her friend's killer to justice.

Bad!!

When Sabrina stumbles upon a dead body in the alley beside her shop, her life is turned upside down. She feels like the case could go cold and she is determined that the town won't have another unsolved case. Her sister went missing 10 years ago and it remains unsolved, and so Sabrina tries to find out who the killer is.

I very very rarely give a book 1 star, I think I can count on one hand the number of times I've rated a book so low, but this book was really bad. I wanted to put it aside numerous times, but because it was a review book, and relatively short, I kept going. I kept hoping it would get better, but unfortunately it didn't!!

I didn't like Sabrina, at all. She had no redeemable qualities in my eyes!! She was extremely pushy and rude and I thought the way she handled things was awful. She had no respect for anyones privacy, and I don't care if they were "suspects" in her mind, people were trying to grieve and she kept pushing.

I found the plot to be a tad ridiculous! I'm sorry, but her "boyfriend" (the author way overused this term) is a detective and was frustrated that the case was going cold after only a day or two. I get that investigating cases if frustrating, but I really don't think a detective would be that dejected after such a short time!! It felt unrealistic and silly. Plus, would he really tell his girlfriend so much about an active case??

In all, this was definitely not for me. I enjoy a good cozy mystery, but this one was pretty bad! I won't be continuing with the series.

Lainie Pahos seems to be a fairly new narrator and it definitely showed. She messed up on the characters voices sometimes and didn't really have the right inflections at the right times. Plus there were two pretty bad mistakes made during the recording. She cleared her throat and repeated herself during the performance! Both glaring mistakes and both of which should have been caught and fixed before production!

I was given this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.

Not one of my favorites.

What did you like best about Chocolate with a Side of Murder? What did you like least?

I like cozy mysteries. I liked the premise of this one. However, I found the main character to be annoying. I did not enjoy her hounding of all the suspects.

Would you be willing to try another book from Meredith Potts? Why or why not?

I don't think so. There are so many other more enjoyable cozy mystery series out there.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

The pace was fine but I found some of the voices irritating like the voice of the main character's sister and grandmother.

Do you think Chocolate with a Side of Murder needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No. As I found the main character unlikable, I wouldn't care to hear any more of her life story.

Any additional comments?

I received a free copy of this audiobook and agreed to leave a review. I'm sorry it couldn't be a more positive one.

I am going to find the murderer.

This was a pretty good book. I have seen this author before and has wanted to try her books. So when i was gifted this book for an honest review, i knew this was my chance to see how i would like this author. I enjoyed the story and the characters. However, Sabrina was very very pushy with her questioning. But she got the job done. I would like to listen to more in this series.

I read, loved and reviewed this book, YOUR TURN

Potts's well-written cozy put a smile on my face. Her writing style is so rhythmic and fast-paced, smooth and focused. I enjoy the way she reveals the story; it is just always a pleasure to read her books.

Clean cozy Mystery

This is part of a series but is great as a stand alone book.A clean cozy mystery about friends and family living in Treasure Cove, California. Sabrina is a coffee barista in her family owned coffee shop. She is an amateur Sleuth who helps her detective husband solve murders. Sabrina goes to empty the coffee shops trash into the dumpster in the alley. Upon openig the door she finds her friend crumpled against the dumpster murdered. This mystery has a cliffhanger ending. I reccommend this book. The characters are believable and interesting. The narration is good. She keeps your interest.

Chocolate with a side of murder

Sabrina finds another dead body. She has to find the killer of Andrew. She questions and badgers her neighbors and cracks the case before her PI boyfriend. These a fun, don't have to think, girly books.Like a sitcom. Lainie Pahos was a fair to good narrator, especially good vally girl talk. There were a number of flubs on the audio, repeated words, etc. I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.

Cozy mystery series, first book.

I really got pulled in with the story of a girl gone missing while taking her morning jog. I was disappointed that the mystery solved in the book was not the mystery of the missing jogger presented at the beginning of the book.

Sabrina, younger sister of the missing girl, is the main character of the book and I didn't find her likeable. She was not only rude; but, cold, insensitive, and heartless at times. Not really what I expect of the main character in a cozy mystery.

The detective in the story is Sabrina's boyfriend. His character was not believable to me. His actions were what you might expect from a rookie, certainly not a detective. He allowed Sabrina so many liberties against procedure that it made the story hard to be enjoyed as it was not believable.

The story followed Sabrina as she tried to figure out who killed her friend; but, it didn't provide clues which would have helped me figure out who the killer was and made it a more enjoyable read.

There were several mysteries presented; but only one solved. It was almost like reading a cliffhanger book. I will read the next book if for no other reason than to see if any of the mysteries that we're created and then ignored are to be solved.
1. Why there are lights on at a mansion that has been abandoned for years? Multiple times.
2. Why certain businessmen of the town are dressed in suits and waiting in line to enter a banquet hall that has been closed for some time? Why is it a such a secret? Why the need to have a guard posted?
3. How is a hypnotherapist supposedly responsible for changing derelicts into model citizens?
4. What is the connection with a physic advisor to the hypnotherapist?
5. Will the mystery that was first presented in the book be solved? What happened to the missing sister?
...Maybe since this is the first book of the series, the writer was simply 'setting the stage' for the series.

I'm new to listening to audiobooks. I thought at first the performer was a little stiff; but; she became more relaxed as the story continued. Even so, it sounded more like a reading to me as opposed to a dramatic performance.

UPDATE after reading book five...
I just finished reading the five book series which started off with a mediocre three stars rating from me on the first book. I am giving a five star rating to the fifth book. The story and characters have improved that much! Each book in the series was a little better than the preceding book. It was well worth reading the entire series. Each book solved one of the mysteries that we're introduced on the first book. Sabrina became more likeable as the series progressed as well. Her abrasiveness soften significantly. David became a more realistic police detective.
