Histoire
Ce'Nedra, Imperial Princess of Tolnedra, is confused. Everyone knows the tales of the Orb protecting the West from the evil god Torak are just silly legends. But here she is, forced to join a quest to recover that stolen Orb. No one believes in sorcery, but Garion's aunt and grandfather seem to be the fabled sorcerers Polgara and Belgarath. Even young Garion is learning to do sorcery. He's just a farm boy, totally unsuitable for an Imperial Princess. Yet for some reason, she has the urge to comfort him.

The quest was over. The Orb of Aldur was restored. And once again, with the crowning of Garion, there was a descendant of Riva Iron-grip to rule as Overlord of the West. And yet the prophecy was unfulfilled. In the east, the evil god Torak was about to awaken and seek dominion. Somehow, Garion had to face the god, to kill or be killed. On the outcome of that dread duel rested the destiny of the world.

Histoire
Legends tell of the evil god Torak coveting the power of the Orb of Aldur. Prophecy also speaks of a time when he will again awaken to seek dominance over all the world. Now the Orb has been stolen by a priest of Torak, and that time is at hand. Belgarath the Sorcerer and his daughter, Polgara the arch-Sorceress, are on the trail of the Orb, seeking to regain it before the final disaster. With them goes Garion, a simple farm boy only months before, but now the focus of the struggle.

Long ago, so the Storyteller claimed, the evil god Torak sought dominion and drove men and Gods to war. But Belgrath the Sorcerer led men to reclaim the Orb that protected the West. So long as it lay at Riva, the prophecy went, men would be safe. That was only a story, and Garion did not believe in magic dooms, even though the man without a shadow had haunted him for years.

Not the Narrator I would like.
i have nothing personally against the narrator. however, everyone in the story seems to either have a slow speach impediment or they are closely related to pepe' la' pewe. i have read all of Eddings books as far as i know. and this particular series is by far my favorite. i just was not happy with the narration. the only voice in the whole series that really seems to fit the character would be Beldin. he was done to perfection. i personnally feel as though this would be a great story to have done "dramatized" with an all star cast..
lol, feel free to contact me for voice recommendations. please do not misunderstand me, the narrator would was fine whenever he was reading the "narration", it is only the voices that ruined it for me.

One step closer...
As I said before I think Cameron Beirle consolidates his footing better and better with each novel. This is no exception. I noticed fewer and fewer inconsistencies with his narration, particularly in this installment.
Having regained the Orb of Aldur from Ctuchik, the now-vanquished disciple of Torak, Belgarion and his companions must escape from the crumbling city of Rak Cthol, pursued by the soldiers of the maniacal king of Cthol Murgos as well as by the sinister arts of the now-leaderless Grolim priests. Only then can they return the Orb to the Hall of the Rivan King, which Polgara reveals must be accomplished by Erastide. From there Belgarion must set out to meet a destiny beyond
his imagining.

Great books, not so great narrator
I love these books and re-read them often. I decided to purchase an audio copy so that I could multi-task. The narrator however, is very disappointing. He is decent for the narration, but his accents & pronunciations are inconsistent, he mispronounces words and his vowels (git instead of get, for example) are awful. With a better narrator I would give it 5 stars.

Good enough - narrator is pretty good!
I must have been very young when I read these books because re-listening to the story it felt a little less magical and little more droll. People keep doing things to their beards “thoughtfully” and the princess is annoying- but it’s an addictive story and the narration keeps you well entertained. It was enough to keep me awake during an eight hour drive and I’m interested enough to download the final book.

Never gets old!
This is probably my 12th time listening to this after reading it several times as an adult and my initial introduction to it in highschool back in the 80's! I absolutely love it!

Forgot the Plot?
slight spoilers
It's good until close to the end where instead of finishing the story the author goes to a different protagonist. But, I didn't really care about any of that. it just seemed like weird pacing. I skipped it.

It’s not all that
The main character has very little to with the plot. His every action is guided by some prophecy or by his aunt or grandfather. Him having an original thought would have been a nice refreshing change of pace. At this point his personality has so little effect on the story and overall plot it’s laughable. There have been bad main characters but man this one is insufferable. He has no skills and no talent, no knowledge of what’s happening around him. He’s all powerful but untrained. He’s almost like an idiot dragon on a chain.

sehr empfehlenswert
Alle Bücher aus dieser Saga von Eddings sind wunderbar gesprochen, die Figuren wurden wirklich zum Leben erweckt. Die Sprache ist gut verständlich und die Stimme sehr angenehm.
