Description

A gang of thieves stage a daring heist from a secure vault deep below Princeton University's Firestone Library. Their loot is priceless, but Princeton has insured it for $25 million.

Bruce Cable owns a popular bookstore in the sleepy resort town of Santa Rosa on Camino Island in Florida. He makes his real money, though, as a prominent dealer in rare books. Very few people know that he occasionally dabbles in the black market of stolen books and manuscripts.

Mercer Mann is a young novelist with a severe case of writer's block who has recently been laid off from her teaching position. She is approached by an elegant, mysterious woman working for an even more mysterious company. A generous offer of money convinces Mercer to go undercover and infiltrate Bruce Cable's circle of literary friends, ideally getting close enough to him to learn his secrets.

But eventually Mercer learns far too much, and there's trouble in paradise as only John Grisham can deliver it.

Terrible!

Extremely dissapointing Pointless plot. No tension. Colorless characters. High school creative writing level. I have read and loved nearly all other Grisham books. Save your time and money.

A total miss

This was for my book club. Apparently, they wanted to pick a "light read." I have never read any John Grisham, but have seen the ubiquitous movies, all flashy, conflicted lawyers on the run for blowing the whistle and doing the right thing. I have never been a fan of those, but they are usually entertaining. So I was quite surprised by this book. Because it did not sound like something that Grisham would have written. The opening scenes about the document heist were intriguing. But then those characters just...disappeared. In walks the main protagonist, a very unforgettable woman who gets caught up in the ruse of conning the con man so she can earn some money. And maybe write her own Great American Novel. I kept thinking that the trust that she put in this woman who was her connection to the "investigators" was misplaced and they would turn out to be connected to the original heist suspects, but no such luck. The book store owner was this weird sort of caricature. Still not sure why anyone would have been enticed into his Victorian mansion man-cave. It was just a bizarre book and the ending was completely ridiculous and troubling that everyone was so blase about the crimes and the fact that some got away with it. I still keep shaking my head about why this was on our book club list.

The underground world of rare manuscripts

a simple plot not up to John gresham's usual standards. Nevertheless it's an interesting listen. though I prefer masculine narrators.
