Kept me on the edge of my seat

I can't believe this is already the seventh book in this series, and that the quality has not diminished since that first book that captivated my attention. This time, Kay Hunter investigates the case of a man found mummified in a building under renovations. At the same time, she's also dealing with some family drama, which won't make things easy.

The story trapped me from the start. Who was the man they found and who had killed and why was he hidden there? There were several twists and turns and we only find the culprit towards the end, and it was not at all who I expected. We met the usual sidekicks helping Kay on this case, and several other characters who made this tale a convoluted story in which everyone seemed to have a hidden agenda.

Kay seems much more confident than in previous books. We have seen her and her team evolve, and I have to say that seven books have made me care for all of them, and listening to a new installment is like returning to a group of old friends.

Alison Campbell's style and voice is the perfect match for these stories, and she is for me an essential part in the series. She has not only become Kay Hunter but also brought a varied cast to life, even employing different accents and styles.

I am ready for the next book in the series, whenever Amphlett has it ready for us. I am an unconditional Kay Hunter's fan.

Overall, still good but...

I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the novels in the series until this one. Somehow, the plot did not keep me as engaged as the others. Still a good procedural yet, certain aspects of the personal side of the characters’ stories just didn’t have the same punch. Some of the feelings and thoughts expressed by them just didn’t seem realistic as there were too many inconsistencies. (Somewhat Spoiler-ish ahead). Would Barnes really have been so insecure? If Kay miscarried (as was explained early on, why is there a grave for the what? Fetus? Baby? Would Adam not insist that Kay seek more therapy after the life threatening incident 2 yrs ago? Overall, I’m still glad I found this series, and I do enjoy them but this novel In The series was just not up to par. The performance was still awesome—All the character’s voices are clear and concise and truly come to life! I do like this author however, but hope that the next one is as good as the first several novels.
