- The coat’s outer shell was placed neatly collar-side up with buttons fastened and showed no footprints or bank disturbance nearby.
- Crews dragged the Millrace Canal for thirty-six hours before a search of drainage culverts recovered Watson’s body about 200 yards from where the coat was found.
- The coat’s quilted lining had been deliberately separated from the shell and was found wrapped on the body, creating the investigators’ pivotal question.
