Description

A simple, practical, and straightforward guide to meditation from Bob Roth, a world authority on Transcendental Meditation who has spent 45 years helping people access their innate creativity and power with TM, having personally taught students ranging from Fortune 100 CEOs to Oprah Winfrey, from war-scarred veterans to inner-city youth.

Every day, we face a growing epidemic of stress, one that is damaging our physical and emotional health at younger and younger ages. Billionaire CEOs, moms managing households, college students, people of every race, age, and income all make the same confession: "I am so stressed." It is literally killing us. While there is no one single cure, there is a simple practice that dramatically changes how we respond to stress and life's challenges: the Transcendental Meditation technique. With scientifically proven benefits - improved focus, sleep, resilience, creativity, and memory to name a few - this 5,000-year-old technique has a clear and direct impact on our very modern problems.

Once a skeptic, Bob Roth trained under Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the twentieth century's foremost scientist of consciousness and meditation, and has since become one of the most experienced and sought-after meditation teachers in the world. Roth saw the profound and practical capabilities of the technique, and as cofounder and chief executive officer of the David Lynch Foundation, he has helped bring TM to more than 500,000 at-risk youth, veterans with PTSD, and women survivors of domestic violence. He also teaches TM to top leaders in government, business, medicine, and the arts.

In Strength in Stillness, Roth breaks down the science behind meditation in a new, accessible way. He highlights the three distinct types of meditation - focused attention, open monitoring, and self-transcending - and showcases the evidence that the third, Transcendental Meditation, is the most effective and efficient way to reduce stress, access inner power, and build resilience. Free of gimmicks, mystical verbiage, and over-inflated research studies, Strength in Stillness is a simple and straightforward guide to calming mind, body, and spirit.

Nothing but a big advertisement

Waste of time. Nothing but a big advertisement to spend $1000 plus on classes to learn to meditate. Don’t waste your money or your time

Does What The Title Says

Would you listen to Strength in Stillness again? Why?

I might, when needing a refresher. The main point is that this book does what it says it does. As someone who took a TM class 2 years ago, he filled in a couple of gaps that opened up since my first classes. Those who write that this book doesn't exactly teach TM miss the point: TM is taught in person, by a certified teacher.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The author.

What does Bob Roth bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

True voice.

What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?

That TM is a different type of meditation--he explained really well how TM differs from focused meditation, from mindfulness meditation, and others. Also the whole "restful wakeful" feeling.

Any additional comments?

This book may be best for those who have already taken the TM course. Some think it's all a sales pitch for the course, but come on, if you're interested, do take the course.

deceptive Marketing

this is a non-helpful book to read. It leads to a deceptive marketing tactic to point you in a direction where in the end you have to pay $500 to go to for classes and get TM certified they say. they say TM Meditation All this book did was tell me about stories on what happened to people when they meditated through transcended militates and it never explained How the meditation works as far as I'm concerned it's a rip off... I I'm sure that transcendent Meditation works however this book won't do nothing for you.... horrible

So the book is a sales pitch to go to a mediation course

You had me at hello.
I thought this book was about how to meditate, instead it’s a sales book on the benefits of meditation. What a fucking waste of time, GTFO with the Katy Perry shit BTW.

Disappointed

I expected something practical that I could use. This was a sales pitch with no actual instructions other than find a teacher. Save your time and money.

Didn’t learn a thing about meditation

Just lost more than two hours hearing stories about people that payed lots of money to learn how to do it. Very disappointing.

Not a meditation book persae

It's not a book on .meditation, it's a collection of stories of individuals we don't know that have used TM. I found myself fast forwarding after chapter 12, same types of stories over and over again, some science back data that yo u can find on the internet. Not worth it. TM should be free for everyone and not cost north of $1000 to learn, ridiculous. Waste of time.

self promoting book. no teaching in it

first few chapters are great but then it goes on for 20 more chapters telling you how wonderful tm is and that you need to go study it ($500 minimum in nyc). by buying the audio you are basically paying to listen to a 10 hours of sales pitch. this book is for people who practice tm. not for people who are interested in it. disappointing
