Description

For more than a year, Royce Melborn has tried to forget Gwen DeLancy, the woman who saved him and his partner Hadrian Blackwater. Unable to stay away any longer, they return to Medford to a very different reception - she refuses to see them.

Once more she is shielding them, this time from the powerful noble who abused her. But she doesn’t know the rules Royce would break to see her safe.

Amazing as always!

I laughed and I cried, yelled at my phone in anger and clapped in relief, what more is there to say?

Heartbreaking

Also it was in a way my least favourite of the Riyria Chronicles, obviously it focuses less on Royce and Hadrian. Hilfred was never that interesting to me. I always found him predictable. Nevertheless the story of Rose
took me in, although tragic and hopeless.

Riyria is Born, High Noon in Medford

No big surprises in the second book of the Riyria Chronicles. Royce Melborn and Hadrian Blackwater became a real team now and do, what they know best, kill the bad guys and save damsels in distress. But in all fairness, Sullivan spins a good yarn and knows, how to tell a story. He skillfully presents two separate storylines and artfully merges them at the great finale. He also is extremely talented in creating colorful, lifelike characters, which are not black and white, but come in all shades between. There is Gwen, the prostitute, who shows kindness and empathy and is filled with the unquenchable thirst for a better life, there is also the young member of the royal guard, who shows courage and loyalty, when all others step back and of course, there are a lot more, who might be worth mentioning.

The first storyline shows us Royce and Hadrian on their way to Medford, where they want to see Gwen DeLancy again, the young prostitute, who saved their life once. To their dismay, they find out upon their arrival that there is something completely wrong. Gwen does not want to see them. Gwen made powerful enemies, her life and the life of her girls is in great danger.

The second storyline is about a conspiracy in Medford. Powerful nobles and representatives of the church intend to kill the king and his family, but one of Gwen’s girls overheard part of the plot and everybody is hunting for her now mercilessly.

If you liked the “Crown Tower”, you will like this book as well. Good entertainement, funny at times, but also moving and touching at other times.

The Plot Thickens

Things get dire for Royce, Hadrian, and the people they care for. In the Riyria Revelations, I actually quite liked Royce, but here, he is downright scary, and I much prefer naive and good-hearted Hadrian.
After the Crown Tower disaster, Royce and Hadrian find themselves a team, but there is still a lot they have to learn and accept about the respective other.

The church of Novron starts to stir and to wreathe their vile plots, and everybody suffers.

Of course, Tim Gerard Reynolds delivers in the way I have come to expect, and he certainly has advanced to my preferred narrator, at least when it comes to scifi and fantasy stories.
I'm so glad I discovered Michael's books, as they kept me entertained for many hours.
I'm looking forward to the next instalment in the Riyria Chronicles series, so I'm now taking a break and will listen to the third volume shortly before the 4th volume is launched.
