Description

On the planet of Discworld, phrases like "there's a Death in the family" take on a whole new meaning. Young Susan has always suspected that her Grandfather was different, as though all the time he spent riding a white horse and wielding a scythe weren't enough of a giveaway. Now that her worst fears have been confirmed, Susan learns that she's expected to take over the family business when she grows up, even though most people mistake her for the Tooth Fairy. But as attractive as Death can be to many people, Susan is drawn into something else: the exciting, addictive heavy beats of "Music with Rocks In," Discworld's latest dance craze.

Old audio

Old audio. You have to crank up the volume to hear the conversation. Not worth the buy. The story is good though.

Unacceptable audio quality

Any additional comments?

The publisher needs to remaster this. It sounds like a duplicate made by holding a tape recorder up to a speaker. The sound is atrocious and should not be made available for sale on this service.

Heavens, the audio quality...

Great book, fantastic narrator, bloody awful audio quality. What a shame. Even at full volume, it’s difficult to hear. Fuzzy at times. And you have to put up with things like “this side is over, please move onto the next file”.

Awful sound quality

Really poor sound quality, like it's copied from a scratched tape, and while it's obviously been through some digital noise reduction, it's still poor. But very good story, and I have nothing bad to say about the reader's performance, just a really cheap and poor job by the studio.

Living on borrowed Music

If you have never read the discword this isn't the book to start with; there are lots of establish story lines going on and you will be much happier starting with Mort.

For those who have read Mort and Reaper Man - you know all about Death and Susan.

This book is about the crowd, music and fame. Something which Pratchett - personal feel - falls a little short on. It's much better then Moving Pictures but somehow need seemed as neat to me as some of the other books.

Witty, entertaining and full of small easter eggs

Where does Soul Music rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Top 25%

What other book might you compare Soul Music to and why?

To most of the other Terry Pratchett books

Which scene was your favorite?

A very funny terminator 2 reference and chase scene where death attempts to ride a motorcycle - with somewhat limited success.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I did laugh. A lot.

Any additional comments?

If you are new to Terry Pratchett and his discworld series this is a decent jumping on point.

Highly enjoyable

The book itself is one of Pratchett's best, full of allusions to the music business and the 1950s. The Wizards are in it (the Dean turns into a 'Rebel Without a Pause', complete with cowlick and his very special trousers, presumably called 'Deans'), DEATH is in it (or rather NOT in it, since he quit his job so that his granddaughter Susan has to take over) and lots of weird musicians are in it (one of whom plays music on rocks and another one behaves quite 'Elvish'). Thus, the whole thing is very amusing and well read by Nigel Planer, who does all the silly voices (including the Death of Rats and the librarian) quite nicely.

Buch top, Tonqualität... na ja

Was genau hätte man an Soul Music noch verbessern können?

Leider die Tonqualität. Die hätte es dringend nötig.

Was mochten Sie an der Handlung am liebsten?

Tod!

Great Book!

Another great book by Terry Pratchett! Soul music is kind of a sequel to Mort, but you don't have to have read it to read this.
Nigel Planer has a good voice to listen to.
I really enjoyed it.
