Description

Suddenly, condemned arch-swindler Moist von Lipwig found himself with a noose around his neck and dropping through a trapdoor into...a government job?

By all rights, Moist should be meeting his maker rather than being offered a position as postmaster by Lord Vetinari, supreme ruler of Ankh-Morpork. Getting the moribund Postal Service up and running again, however, may prove an impossible task, what with literally mountains of decades-old undelivered mail clogging every nook and cranny of the broken-down post office.

Worse still, Moist could swear the mail is talking to him. Worst of all, it means taking on the gargantuan, greedy Grand Trunk clacks communication monopoly and its bloodthirsty, piratical headman.

But if the bold and undoable are what's called for, Moist's the man for the job, to move the mail, continue breathing, get the girl, and specially deliver that invaluable commodity that every being, human or otherwise, requires: hope.

Great as an audiobook

Warning - don't listen to this book whilst driving in peak hour traffic, it's so funny you can't concentrate on the driving! The combination of Terry Prachett as author and Stephen Briggs as narrator is the best. Highly recommended.

Probably one of the best Discworld novels

I thoroughly enjoyed Going Postal. Postmaster Moist Von Lupwig is a brilliantly thought out character (or should I say Mr. Spangler).

The Patrician of Ankh-Morpork, decides to put a fraudster, embezzler and thief in charge of the Royal Post Office. He must resurrect the white elephant from the ashes. What follows is typical Terry-Pratchett-wiz(z)ardry.

I also enjoyed Stephen Briggs' performance. He made the characters come live and made you wish you were there! Highly recommended!!!

Nice Moist Von Lipwig book.

A very good book. Pratchetts discworld is going into the industrial revolution and I really like this one. This is a pretty good book and I like his style. I haven't decided if I like Stephen Briggs better than Nigel Planer or not though.

great book.

This is a very funny book, Terry Pratchett has a strange mind, but you cannot stop reading, the mind pictures are amazing. So all in all a great book, a great read, and if you don't find yourself giggling quietly you will find your self laughing out loud.

Fantastic!

This is now one of my very favorite books in the Discworld series. The characters are fresh and interesting, the plot is well devised and is a great read on the whole.

Pratchett as good as ever

Pratchett has a gift for deconstructing and writing from wildly different perspectives and this book is no different. Well read by Briggs too, with just the right amount of acting without turning into a radio play.

Great story

One of Terry's best plotted and paced book. A fun new character and clever musings on the nature of money, greed, hope and people's gullibility.
This is an older audiobook so the sound quality is a bit low.

What a discovery, what fun

Terry Pratchett is such an enjoyable writer. I love his term-of-phrase. I plan to read the whole series, well listen to it especially if Stephen Briggs is narrating. He is such a joy to listen to. Like a fairytale for adults with such silliness that it makes every word a delight to listen to. I don't know if reading is better but with the accents, and rhythm of speech, I think you can't get better than listening to it.

I've listened to this 4 times

Maybe it's because of Moist, my favour to character?
One of the very best! Stephen Briggs narration is most fitting for the von Lipwig series. Bravo!!

Excellent

Any additional comments?

Possibly my favourite DIscworld novel so far. I highly recommend it, particularly if you like the stories surrounding the City Watch, which I think are similar in style to this one. As always, Stephen Briggs does a great job of reading - he is particularly good at rendering all the footnotes, asides and internal monologues clearly without confusing the narrative.

very amused

Es ist immer ärgerlich: man ließt einen neuen Pratchett auf deutsch und nur die Hälfte der Jokes kommen an.Das englische Hörbuch ist um Meilen besser, als das deutsche. Zudem liegt eine ungekürzte Version vor, was also kein Pointe vermissen läßt. Ein neuer Charakter umgeben von alten Bekannten... Für mich ein sehr gelungenes Werk vom Meister der Schiebenwelt

Yeesss!

My favorite character in Discworld has always been Lord Vetinari and in this book he becomes an angel... and this is a somewhat mixed blessing for Moist von Lipwig, a crook charged with reforming the moribund post office. Oh, and did I mention the fierce competition led by a pirate with ambitions?

This book is one of the highlights of the whole series, the new characters and the particular storyline are not only funny but thoughtful and a romantic look back to quieter times. A few scenes reminded me of Michael Palin's "Hemingways Chair", also a eulogy of the gone world of the post office, but on discworld things are possible ...

The performance of Stephen Briggs is flawless, so go ahead and listen. I will do so again!

a genius

a great book, sometimes ironic, sometimes serious, often funny and never boring or too long. I can't wait for audible to bring out the second part making money in english, since the translations are just missing lots of puns and jokes, that pratchett is putting into the books

Audio quality not so good

Great story, really like the Moist cycle. But audio quality not so good. Did they digitize old cassette tapes? ;-)

Terry Pratchett - immer wieder Klasse
