Description

Kaylin returned from the West March in one piece. Now that piece is fraying. She's not at home in the Imperial Palace - and she never intends to be. All she wants is normal garden-variety criminals and a place of her own. Of course, normal in her new life involves a dragon as a roommate, but she can handle that. Kaylin can't as easily handle the new residents to the city she polices, because one of them is Nightshade's younger brother. On a night when she should be talking to landlords in perfectly normal buildings, she's called to the fief - by Teela. A small family disagreement has become a large, complicated problem: Castle Nightshade's latent magic is waking. And it's not the only thing.

Critiques

"The concept of home plays a big role in Sagara's newest Chronicles of Elantra installment. Being a fish out of water is the other theme explored, since a number of new secondary characters are from out of time. Sagara brilliantly weaves these threads together, developing emotional resonance that intermingles with the unfolding danger." ---RT Book Reviews

still a good listen...but...

i have loved this series from the first. that being said, i feel it's time for Kaylin to grow up and mature. this is book 10 and still we listen to the tantrums, and the childishness of Kaylin as a 20 year old, that we listened to as a 13 year old. it is high time she be allowed to grow up by the author.
i seriously missed the role of Nightshade, he was a vague mention at best. Severn had a small supporting part, Teela had a bit more, but nothing of consequence. all the old, well loved characters were sadly missing any importance in this book, and therefore was not as enjoyable a listen.
i hope the appearance of new characters does not mean the beloved characters that make this series so good, will not be part of the core of the next book/s. it is a combination of these main characters of the first 9 books that make this series work. without them, the book falls short, as this one did.

story shift

I really like Sagara's work but the last few books in this series reflect an experience a great deal like watching a dog circle a space trying to lay down. I think long running series get into this problem as the stories need to shift focus to continue. I think this problem is knowable and I think the authors should invest in a good editor. Sagara's work will never reduce to Elmore Leonard's notion of just take out the boring parts. The circles and hesitations are part of her art, but when authors need to redirect there is a confusion of repetitve language that an editor could help a reader negotiate. These writers seem to get through on contracts and fan preference but honestly- there is a tedious quality to their search through buildings and action sequences and moral dilemma's that are just tiring. I really like Sagara's work and will continue to buy the audio- I love the narrator- but in her case I would offer a notion ment to help. There is value in her work that is both interesting and affecting.

This is book 10-

This is book ten - if you liked the previous 9 books this will be just as enjoyable. If not then start with Cast in Shadow. There are a few inconsistent with the previous books but they are very minor. I really love how this series is able to continue to expand without need to "develop" new rules or myths to keep the books good.

Audible please ask Michelle to add to this series to more international locations.

The series continues slowly....

I am a huge fan of Michelle Sagara and the Chronicles of Elantra, I understand the progression of the story, but I am on pins and needles waiting to find out what Kaylin's REAL purpose, she has saved cities and avatars, and even Two dragons. She has two possibilities for a love interest but because she's not immortal everyone except Severn treat her as is she is a child. I am going to stick with the series but hope for more in the next one.

good story. things don't line up with other books.

narrator was as always fantastic. Odds and ends if you are listening for them and know the other books do not line up. Just like in previous books where Antila claims her mother was an only child as an excuse for her parents indulgence, then next book say the Wardens mother was her mother's older sister. same type of changes that could have been on purpose of a mistake. guess we will find out next book....

It's getting really repetitive

What disappointed you about Cast in Flame?

This is not a bad book , just one the author has written before. There's no romance in this whole book, Homes need love friends need love, families need love, dragons need love - even enemies need love. Kaylin has no love. In the story goes around in circles. It's the same thing if so just a little different. Getting really repetitive!

long winded introspection

I love the series, however this book had much more self-reflection then any of the other books so far.
