Avis de l'équipe

Whispers Under Ground, Book 3 in the best-selling PC Peter Grant series by Ben Aaronovitch and narrated by English actor Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is a laugh-out-loud, modern mystery crime detective audiobook, complete and unabridged. London is not as it seems – from evil Gods and Goddesses of the Thames, dark magic lurking in the tube system and monsters hiding in the shadows, it is up to wizard and PC Peter Grant to maintain order. PC Grant must use his cunning detective skills to track down a killer in Soho. But it’s a dangerous task when there’s no one to call for backup. Available now from Audible.

Description

Doctor Who screenwriter Ben Aaronovitch's superbly entertaining supernatural crime series has, with its witty one-liners and wonderfully erudite take on London, won a legion of fans in double-quick time.

Peter Grant is learning magic fast. And it’s just as well - he's already had run ins with the deadly supernatural children of the Thames and a terrifying killer in Soho. Progression in the police force is less easy, especially when you work in a department of two. A department that doesn't even officially exist. A department that if you did describe it to most people would get you laughed at.

And then there's his love life. The last person he fell for ended up seriously dead. It wasn't his fault, but still. Now something horrible is happening in the labyrinth of tunnels that make up the tube system that honeycombs the ancient foundations of London. And delays on the Northern line is the very least of it.

Time to call in the Met's Economic and Specialist Crime Unit 9, aka 'The Folly'. Time to call in PC Peter Grant, Britains Last Wizard.

This edition is read by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. Kobna is a film, theatre, television, and radio actor. His television credits include Little Britain, Saxondale, Pulling, Taking the Flak, Star Stories, and Sirens; his theatre credits include lead roles at the National, Tricycle, Young Vic, Manchester Royal Exchange, Bush, and Shakespeare's Globe theatres, and he has also been in numerous BBC radio plays. He has voiced audiobooks by Alastair Reynolds and Ben Aaronovitch for Orion.

Ripping good fun

Would you listen to Whispers Under Ground again? Why?

Yes, again and again and again. The book is so much fun and the narration by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is exceptional.

What other book might you compare Whispers Under Ground to and why?

If you're a fan of the Iron Druid books you certainly wont go wrong here. A step above Dresden.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely, I had to force myself to stop so I could get some sleep or stop driving around. Highly addictive listening.

Any additional comments?

Urban fantasy and mystery rolled in to one brilliant package and presented with the utmost finesse.

It felt heavy and too elaborated

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I missed the spunk and funk from the first two books.

What was most disappointing about Ben Aaronovitch’s story?

In parts it was too elaborated. The description of the rummaging through the sewers was too long and did not really develop in anything to help the unfolding of the story.
The introducing chapter was interesting and one thought it would be put to use in some way over the span of the story but it came back at the very end with a little twist but had nothing to do with the main storyline.

What three words best describe Kobna Holdbrook-Smith’s voice?

Mr Holdbrook-Smith's performance was again very good and enjoyable. At times Leslie's nasal lisp was a bit hard to understand though.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Whispers Under Ground?

The long trail through the sewers.

Any additional comments?

Now I wonder if in the next sequel the British Museum of Natural History will come to life at night?

Bisher schwächster Band der Reihe

Mein Fazit:

Crime, humour, magic!

I love these books. A brilliant combination of crime, fantasy and humour. The narrator is also amazing: his timing of the funny bits is spot on and his portrayal of the different characters is perfect.

Not for beginners: Magic gets more complicated

Another superb performance by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith: it is such a joy to listen to the voice and appreciate the various class and ethnic accents that make the story so much richer than the e-/print version.

But the story gets more and more complicated. While it was possible to understand and enjoy “Moon over Soho” without necessarily having read/listened to “Rivers of London” this is no longer the case here. Lack of prior knowledge of the characters and the rules that govern them makes it impossible to understand the plot.

And it is an expanding plot: acquiring now also the hint of international aspects (and I do not just refer to the female FBI agent who is really a redhead…) and discoveries deep underground. The hero and the plot almost get lost in the tunnels and sewers and suddenly the murder case the listener has almost forgotten is solved. Wow, magic – but not for beginners.

However if you are – like me - a fan of the series: enjoy. The hints are there: this book is a link between the beginnings and what is to follow in “Broken Homes” and (hopefully many more) further sequels.

Brilliant erudite humour.

Good magical crime fiction. At times a bit difficult to understand for non-native-speakers. I really loved it.

Narrator is truly wonderful

I love these stories and Mr Holdbrook Smith is a joy to listen to. I seem to have to buy all of them. Highly recommended.
