Description

Jack Turner comes back to Culpepper to give a series of lectures for his old history professor. Within days, he starts having bizarre experiences at night. Like he's traveling back in time, experiencing the epic events in his lectures firsthand. He has no control over these experiences and can't make them stop.

Joe Boyd thought he'd left big-city crime back in Pittsburgh when he took a detective job in Culpepper, Georgia, a sleepy southern college town. His peaceful life ends when two students turn up dead in two weeks. The coroner is saying natural causes, but something doesn't add up.

Rachel Cook, a teaching assistant at Culpepper, can't believe Jack is back in her life again. She's had a crush on him since she was 14, but Jack never knew. He instantly seems attracted to her, but she can tell that something is deeply troubling him.

Watching all this from a distance is Nigel Avery. He's certain this experiment's about to unravel. It'll be his job to tie up all the loose ends when it does.

Critiques

"Though Walsh steps into a different genre, fans will not be disappointed. He continues to infuse historical facts into his books, bringing history to life in this character-driven tale. The pace quickens as events unfold, making it challenging for the reader to predict the twists and turns." (RT Book Reviews)

Excellent Debut

Dan Walsh has previously written historical romantic novels with great pacing and unexpected plot twists.I have read a few and each is very good. This was his first venture into the murder mystery, thriller genre.
I thought it was very well done. The book was hard to put down. Interesting characters... the author had you caring about their futures.

The narrator was surprisingly very good. This was not a major publication so I was slightly apprehensive about the quality. But the performance was excellent. Voicing of the various characters was distinct and easily identifiable. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and look forward to listening to the next mystery novel by Dan Walsh!

Not the author's usual style .... still great!

We have loved all of Dan Walsh's books. While this is a different style for him, he proves he can meet the challenge. This book has his signature romance and humor and adds a lot of drama to the mix. The dream scenes were especially exciting. We are currently listening to the 2nd book and highly recommend them both!

Awesome Book

The characters & story line were believable & kept me wanting to keep reading. Can't wait to read the next book in the Jack Turner series.

Weak hero

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The ending was very unexpected and also out of character for the conservative, thoughtful lead character. He suddenly became totally stupid!

How could the performance have been better?

The reader needed more energy throughout.

Boring and shallow

Most boring, syrupy, obvious and transparent book I've listened to in a long time. The narrator has a irritatingly sing song voice. Buy something else.

Great story for a high school student.

Solid story, a bit too simplistic. Predictable but not annoying. So I guess I could recommend if your taste isn't for the intense, psycho thrillers.

History buffs will love this

Not a bad book; my husband loves this period history and will likely rank it a 5.
