Description

Be who you are.

When people look at George, they think they see a boy. But she knows she's not a boy. She knows she's a girl.

George thinks she'll have to keep this a secret forever. Then her teacher announces that their class play is going to be Charlotte's Web. George really, really, really wants to play Charlotte. But the teacher says she can't even try out for the part...because she's a boy. With the help of her best friend, Kelly, George comes up with a plan. Not just so she can be Charlotte - but so everyone can know who she is, once and for all.

Marvelous Story!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes! Jamie Clayton is the right voice for GEORGE. She provides a narration filled with the right emotions and an accurate tone of voice. Jamie does a great job of bringing this story to life!

What other book might you compare George to and why?

Gracefully Grayson, because it is also a great Middle Grade story about a trans kid.

What about Jamie Clayton’s performance did you like?

Her voice fit. The right combination of story + narration is a tough one to find, and listening to an audiobook when you don't like how the voice of the narrator sounds and/or when it feels like it's not a good match for the book can be disheartening. But this was not the case, the minute I started listening I didn't want it to stop and I wanted to know how things would end.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me cry in some scenes. It made super happy in others. And there was one particular scene when I felt super tense just waiting for the outcome!

Any additional comments?

This is a wonderful and very important story. I'm so happy GEORGE exists for the kids (and adults) who need it (and even for the ones who "don't"). Alex Gino knocked it out of the park with this one.

Must Read!

Would you consider the audio edition of George to be better than the print version?

I dont do print versions- but the answer is always yes.

Who was your favorite character and why?

George of course!

Which scene was your favorite?

When George was looking for girl clothes to wear for the first time.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes and i did

Any additional comments?

This is a great book that really transcends all age groups. George is a transgender little girl who is struggling with finding herself and hoping others accept her as well. I love that the book starts off using the feminine pronouns for George and keeps them throughout the book. I loved that it shows struggles on transgender youth without being a completely sad book and it ends on a happy note. I read the entire book in one setting and was glad I did.

Wow, a happy ending!

This book is an amazing portrayal of the trans experience from a trans writer and narrator. As a Cis person, I felt like I finally saw from George's perspective the daily slights and indignities suffered by kids whose identitities do not match the gender assigned to them at birth. Every time George was misgendered, even by those who love her, I winced. So many stories about trans kids are syrupy-sweet optimism or scary and depressing; To have a portrayal be realistic but with a happy ending felt good and real. I hope to share the print book with my students this year, and give my students another perspective of what it may be like for trans people in our world.

Quick, interesting read

I teach fifth graders, it is so interesting to reading books that are about this age group. However this book took it above and beyond. Literature about a student Georges age, questioning his/her gender is unheard of. At least in my experience, I have only read that topic from a teens point of view. It was very interesting to listen to, I finished it in one "sitting" "Audible 20 Review Sweepstakes Entry"

Sweet Story; Good narration

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

My review from Goodreads:

I absolutely love that someone wrote a story about a trans girl for this age level. It’s a quick, sweet story that I hope will help increase knowledge and understanding at all age levels. In fact, I kind of wish every elementary and middle school teacher in Missouri had to read it.

Transgender middle school story

An excellent story about a young girl learning to let everyone know she is a girl. I listened to this with my 9 year old transgender child and it sparked some really good discussions. There was a lot in here about what it's like to be born in the wrong body and about the bullying people like that often have to deal with. We both loved the character George and her best friend Kelly. The principal of the school was great too.

The narrator did an excellent job of portraying the different characters and the moods George was going through.

If you're looking for a good book to share with friends or family about transgender stuff this is a great place to start. It's also simply a good book in its own right.
