Carrick Francis has spent most of his life jumping into trouble with both feet. The only thing saving him from prison or worse is his absolute devotion to Deacon Winters. Deacon was Crick's sanity and salvation during a miserable, abusive childhood, and Crick would do anything to stay with him forever. So when Deacon's father dies, Crick puts his college plans on hold to help Deacon as Deacon has helped him.Deacon's greatest wish is to see Crick escape his memories and the town they grew up in so Crick can enjoy a shining future. But after two years of growing feelings and temptation, the painfully shy Deacon finally succumbs to Crick's determined advances and admits he sees himself as part of Crick's life.
It nearly destroys Deacon when he discovers Crick has been waiting for him to push him away, just like Crick's family did in the past. When Crick's knack for volatile decisions lands him far away from home, Deacon is left, shell-shocked and alone, struggling to reforge his heart in a world where love with Crick is a promise, but by no means a certainty.
The tale of Crick and Deacon is filled with a plethora of emotions ranging from elation to despair. The writing style of Amy Lane is fantastic and Sean Crisden's narration added to the story. I have listened to this book several times and I still find myself laughing out loud and shedding a tear. A great story! One I highly recommend.

If you enjoy gay romance novels then this book is one you just can not pass by.
Even though the setting of the audiobook made me think twice about purchasing the book, it was just the exact place and people that just made the story.
The characters may have their flaws, but the love, hope and sense of family throughout the entire book is pure joy and had me crying on many occasions. I cried at the very end, not just because of the ending, but because I felt so much a part of the characters lives and I had witnessed their growth and pain, it felt like that I myself as losing friends and family. I just wanted it to continue.
I immediately went out and purchased the paper back and the next installment of the series and Amy Lane jumped to my favourite author of all time.
This is one audiobook that I do not regret purchasing, not even for a second.

The sole reason I read this one is because of the Narrator...but I was also curious about the story as well...this book was GREAT!!
It had all the elements in a book that make you NOT want to put it down or stop listening!
The characters were so real b/c of the narrator and the writing...
I can tell this is another one that I wouldn't mind reading again, and again, and again!!

I enjoyed the ride along with their emotional and relational growth. The story arch is perfect, I felt like a part of their family by the end looking toward the future with Crick and Deacon. Oh, yes, sexual encounters were hot and realistic at the same time. Love it, highly recommend it.

Listening to this audiobook was very painful. While a certain amount of conflict and misunderstanding can help to fuel a romance, this isn’t so much a romance as a test to see how much pain and abuse the reader is willing to see two people haplessly put each other through.
The device of conflict in this story reaches and maintains a level of emotional turmoil on the characters that can only be called sadistic. The rare moments of tenderness the characters are allowed are short, few and far between. Like an occasional bucket of water on a forest fire there isn’t much relief.

Any additional comments?
I have owned this book for over a year but hadn’t read it because I heard there was so much angst in this. Boy howdy is there angst in this. Additionally, my old nemesis Miscommunication came to party with Angst and brought his a**hole brother, Misunderstanding, too.
So Angst, Miscommunication and Misunderstanding are at the party playing their loud music, being a**holes and just generally making it hard for Hope, Joy and Love to hear themselves over the racket and din. For a second it looked like Hope was just going to ditch entirely, when finally, Common Sense showed up and told Angst, Miscommunication and Misunderstanding to get the f*ck out.
I was grateful for Sean Crisden’s narration. I’ll tell you, he kept me going on this one through all the extraordinarily difficult times Amy Lane put her characters through. Seriously, there’s death, amputation of limbs, flooding, explosions, abuse, cheating, rape, depression…the only thing that didn’t happen to these characters was a plague of locusts.
Yet, Lane composes it all brilliantly like a gorgeous symphony of emotions and feelings, and Crisden delivers it like a pro. Bring a box of tissues with you for this one, folks – you probably aren’t getting out dry-eyed.
Now I need a damn hug.

This is a wonderfully written story of sacrifice, values and decency. You can't help but admire both of the main characters for what life throws at them and how they manage to carry on.

I am totally on this m/m romance kick right now and this just totally did it for me. I loved it! When Crick ran away to the ARMY... I was shocked...but when Crick was actually not a flamming queen in the ARMY I was so proud....
Being an ex-Army soldier myself, I have lots of friends who were queens, but they weren't all... flamming.. They were actually really tough guys, but they definitely where queens... So this just made me think about all of them.
The story seem so real... (my life experiences help me relate)... and Crisden narration just put this story over the top. I loved the smex scenes.;.. sooo real... Amy Lane seems to have hit or miss depending on who is narrating her stories. Any Crisden narration is a hit, but others are very iffy!
Great credit... don't buy, but wait for your credit... But this was soo good... Just started book 2 and it is not lookin so hot.. but then again, it is not Crisden narrating...

Humor + angst, which enables from the begging to this constructed family that often occurs from LGBT challenges of the characters and most importantly the back stories are woven well into the story
The future books also benefit from this constructed and thoughtful story telling
Just like other romances mm writers would read and learn the simpli how this can

I like angsty books, but Amy Lane often skates that line between really angsty or just painful. this book was painful like Chase in the Shadow, while I enjoyed Chase, I didn't Deacon's descent into depression hell.
Plus, I think I am one of the few that don't enjoy Sean Crisden other than as Ty & Zane. I am not sure why, but I only like him in Cut & Run. If I get book two, I will read it not listen to it.

Honestly, I expected something more "mainstream" with a lot of hot scenes. And when the book started with a 9 and a 14 years old kid I was baffled and skeptical.
And I got something quite different, a real love story with all the good and bad decisions, with real life interfering and with a breathtaking love.
It's an extraordinary book - I was so eager to listen to it that my family complained about it. I wanted to know what happend but I dreaded the end - meaning I have to leave Deacon, Crick and their family again. Finally a book I didn't know what was going to happen, surprising turns, wonderful love moments - and I not only mean the hot ones.
For me the book is a "Must read" (or in my case a "Must Listen") And because I purchased it as audio, I have to say that the narrator did a very good job. He gave every person it's own voice without sounding strange and he defintely was able to show the emotions without getting corny.
I really hope, that more books of Amy Lane will be published as audiobook soon.
