    Nothing could be taken for granted

    I found Nigel Carrington a splendid narrator; the sort of voice that conveys everything necessary except his own self.
    The story reminds us how recently the world as they knew it had crumbled suddenly around ordinary people, and it raises questions they would have had to face under German occupation- just as today we are beginning to have to face uncomfortable questions. As usual with Ken Follett the villain is nuanced and at first makes one partly sympathetic. The heroes are so scared so much of the time which makes their heroism credible and so admirable. And it kept me listening, enthralled. Rare these days.
