    Description

The saga of the Logan family - made famous in the Newbery Medal-winning Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry - concludes in a long-awaited and deeply fulfilling story.

In her 10th book, Mildred Taylor completes her sweeping saga about the Logan family of Mississippi, which is also the story of the civil rights movement in America of the 20th century.

Cassie Logan, first met in Song of the Trees and Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, is a young woman now, searching for her place in the world, a journey that takes her from Toledo to California, to law school in Boston, and, ultimately, in the '60s, home to Mississippi to participate in voter registration. She is witness to the now-historic events of the century: the Great Migration north, the rise of the civil rights movement, preceded and precipitated by the racist society of America, and the often violent confrontations that brought about change.

Rich, compelling storytelling is Ms. Taylor's hallmark, and she fulfills expectations as she brings to a close the stirring family story that has absorbed her for over 40 years. It is a story she was born to tell.

    Commentaires

"Taylor is unsparing in her depiction of the years of segregation and of the Black experience of white racism, bigotry, and injustice ... this never-didactic book is irresistibly readable, while the richly realized, highly empathic characters are unforgettable. Taylor's remarkable novel is, in sum, that rare exception: an absolutely indespensible book." (Booklist)

"This story also gives readers an up-close and personal view of key events of the civil rights movement. In this Logan swan song, Taylor is at her best. Surely the crown jewel of the Logan family Saga." (Kirkus)

    Amazing

I loved the story. I have read all of the books in the Logan series and I have been awaiting this sequel for years!!!!! The ending is sad though and I would have liked for Cassie to have married Moe.

I've always wanted a last Logan Family book!

But after finishing it...I want more! I am a retired elementary school teacher and I have used all , except The Land, as literature studies and read alouds with my students. The Land is a more mature book, so i couldn't use it with 12 year olds. So many parents would tell me that Cassie was their favorite character, so we started the CASSIE AWARDS for standing up for what is right in our classroom and on the playground. I keep in touch with several former student who are now adults, and have recommended this new addition to the Logan Family.

    Awesome book!

Loved the story from beginning to the end. I wish there was another story after this one. Also wish the would make movie of the whole Mildred Taylor collection, like they did the Color Purple.

A perfect ending to the Logan family.

I loved the books about the Logan family. I read them all. I loved how their sense of family was so strong and I loved how they used their brains to overcome adversity. Now they are all adults. I can’t say this has been my favorite book, but it was a perfect ending for the members of the Logan family. It is a must read for fans of the Logan family.

Awesome book but ending was to rushed

Author seemed to rush the ending too much she should’ve had either Cassie marry Guy to help mend segregation or get back with Moe
She leaves Cassie alone and then ends the book 👎

Amazing end to an amazing series

I started reading Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry in sixth grade and although that was the only book that we read in class, I took it upon myself to read the next two books and the few novellas Mildred D. Taylor authored. These characters that I’ve become so emotionally invested in have become like family to me and I’ve always wondered how their story had ended. I didn’t know this book expiated until two days ago and since then I’ve been binge listening to it and crying along with all the highs and lows, getting anxious at all the risky moments and above all, enjoying hearing their story. Thank you so much Mildred D. Taylor for giving us a finale that was well worth the wait!

    Oh my goodness...

Ms. Taylor has outdone herself. I am 39 and I grew up on the Logan family saga and have read and reread all of the books, most recently The Land (for the third time). I've always felt so connected to the stories. I come from a close-knit Mississippi family with elements very similar to the Logans, and these books helped me imagine what life was like for my grandparents and those before. This book may be my favorite of the series. I don't know whether or not it was her intention, but this book feels like it was written specifically for those of us who have loved the Logans all of our lives. Thank you, Ms. Taylor, for sharing with us your unmatched gift for storytelling and for giving us these characters to love and cherish as our own. ❤️

Also, praises to Allyson Johnson for bringing the story and characters to life. I've attempted audio books before and just couldn't get into it. I preferred to feel the book in my hands and give voice to the characters myself. I've never gotten past the first few minutes. So the fact that I so enjoyed listening to another person give voice to these characters who I've known and loved since I was a child is truly a testament to Ms. Johnson's skill as a narrator.

Edit (SPOILERS AHEAD): I would also like to respond to the reviewer "PDP." This story WAS, in fact, narrated by a black woman. I knew it by her voice, but a quick internet search confirmed. And yes, it was obvious that Cassie didn't have a plan with her movie theater stand. She was reeling from other events and felt emotionally compelled to do SOMETHING. But she learned from that experience that her recklessness could have dire consequences for herself and others (like Moe). It was a learning experience. It also foreshadowed her future involvement with the civil rights movement. We have the benefit now of looking backward at the highlights of the movement, but Ms. Taylor takes us on the journey of how people of different ages, races, and backgrounds experienced the movement from its earliest days-- the clumsy but passionate acts of defiance that evolved into strategic, meticulously planned operations; the older folks who were at first certain things would never change and didn't want to stir up trouble, but eventually saw the value in incremental progress even in the face of danger, and even began to do their part; the white people who fought maniacally against change, the ones who fought for it, and the ones who were just trying to understand what it all meant because they had never given race relations and their superior position in society much thought. I just wanted to say that, because I felt that PDP's summation of the book was incredibly unfair and somewhat shallow.

Excellent end of the Roll of Thunder series

A perfect end to Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry book series. it continues the story of Cassie and the Logan family..their struggles living in segregated, racially divided America but also shows progress and hints at positive changes to come..America working its way toward equality and non discrimination. the series great for older schoolchildren so they can understand things like racism and its history from the point of view of a young person they can relate to..not just facts in a textbook
