Description

The inspiration for the BBC series of the same name.

Fresh out of Glasgow Veterinary College, to the young James Herriot 1930s Yorkshire seems to offer an idyllic pocket of rural life in a rapidly changing world. But from his erratic new colleagues, brothers Siegfried and Tristan Farnon, to incomprehensible farmers, herds of semiferal cattle, a pig called Nugent and an overweight Pekingese called Tricki Woo, James find he is on a learning curve as steep as the hills around him. And when he meets Helen, the beautiful daughter of a local farmer, all the training and experience in the world can't help him....

Since they were first published, James Herriot's memoirs have sold millions of copies and entranced generations of animal lovers. Charming, funny and touching, All Creatures Great and Small is a heartwarming story of determination, love and companionship from one of Britain's best-loved authors.

Critiques

"I grew up reading James Herriot's books and I'm delighted that 30 years on, they are still every bit as charming, heartwarming and laugh-out-loud funny as they were then." (Kate Humble)

A radiator of warmth and kindess

I read this as a lonely lad sent away to boarding school in the 1980's, James Herriot was a terrific companion.
Rereading this in the world of 2018 it was even better than I remembered it.
Great characters; human and animal, difficult cases, detective work, suspense, romance, comedy, booze and buckets of charm, this wonderful book has it all. Highly recommended.

As good as I remembered it to be

I read these years ago and this reading certainly was up to my expectations. No complaints about the narration, and some of the stories had me in stitches. I cant wait to start the second volume

Enthralling

What a lovely book and so well read! It made me laugh out loud in public at times and had just enough details about veterinary science of the time to be interesting and not so much as to take away from the story. Characters have great depth of description. A book that really deserves a cup of tea and a comfy chair.

Delightful!

James Herriot’s wonderful writing is paired perfectly with the talented, versatile and playful narration of Christopher Timothy in this audio book. I enjoyed every moment and felt sad when it ended.

A classic everybody should listen to

I fondly remembered the TV series, which was a family treat on a Sunday afternoon when I was a child. So, when my dad was bedridden earlier this year, I bought the DVDs for him to watch. However, I wanted to listen to the original, and at my own pace, so I acquired the audio book.

I'm so glad I did. Christopher Timothy does a great narration, and the story has all it needs, even without the images (although I have to admit that I had the TV characters before my inner eye, even if they didn't quite seem to match the description in the book).

If you want to spend a few delightful hours listening to a story about life in the Yorkshire Dales in the last century, go on and treat yourselves to this wonderful rendition of a wonderful book. For me, it is a classic, even though it's just a few decades ago that James Alfred "Alf" Wight (aka James Herriot) struggled with weather, beast, and man.
