Description

As a child Chris Hooper dreamed of monsters. But in deep space, he found only darkness and isolation. Then, on planet LV178, he and his fellow miners discovered a storm-scoured, sand-blasted hell - and trimonite, the hardest material known to man.

When a shuttle crashes into the mining ship Marion, the miners learn that there was more than trimonite deep in the caverns. There was evil, hibernating - and waiting for suitable prey. Hoop and his associates uncover a nest of Xenomorphs, and hell takes on a new meaning. Quickly they discover that their only hope lies with the unlikeliest of saviors....

Ellen Ripley, the last human survivor of the salvage ship Nostromo.

A very good listen.

I don't usually write reviews, I normally just rate them, but this book was so unexpectedly different from what I thought it would be, I had to write.
I expected the book to be the same story from all the other books or movies, with different words and character names, but I was very surprised. The book was very good, I didn't want to pause it when I had to, and I stayed up until 6am just to finish it. If you like the Alien stuff, or Sci-fi stuff, I definitely recommend giving this book a go, my personal opinion was, it was very good, and very much worth the credit. Oh, and I hope you enjoy Alien: Out of the Shadows as much as I did.

A Serviceable Aliens Story

I wasn't thrilled with "Alien: Out of the Shadows: Book 1" overall, but there's a lot that I liked about it.

The narrator is great. His voice seemed perfectly suited for the subject matter, and he performed a number of recognizable, credible male and female Voices. Jeff Harding's contribution is the highlight of the production.

Also, it's well-written. It's a testament to Lebbon's skill as an author that he's able to make the actual writing almost an afterthought--the writing is unobtrusive and serves the story perfectly.

However, I didn't find the story all that exciting. Lebbon knows how to write action, but there's quite a bit of downtime that never is as suspenseful as it could or should be.

Lastly, although I suspect it might have been a decision outside of the author's hands, I think the addition of movie characters Ripley and Ash into this story was particularly unfortunate, as I never believed that these canonical characters would be in any way changed by the time the story was through. But hey--no spoilers--maybe it turned out that I was wrong,.

Annoying Narrator!

As someone above pointed out. The fella reading this ends each sentence with a obnoxious inflection. After a while it starts to get on your nerves! Almost forgot: one of the characters sounds like Pepe Le Pew! Fella, if you can't do an accent, PLEASE don't try...it sounds really silly!

Great Story, annoying narrator

Narrator has great enunciation, good characterizations, good pacing, consistent level, decent accents. So why only two stars? Picture if you will a world class actor, let's say Sean Connery, giving a tremendous awesome performance, wearing a clown nose and big pink bunny ears. No matter how good the performance it is ridiculously annoying with clown nose and bunny ears. It is like that with Jeff Harding. He reads every line with a sing song tone rise and drop, rise and drop. da da Da DAH, da da Da DAH, da da Da DAH, da da Da DAH. Most. Every. Line. Dialogue he does better with. But his general narration is very annoying and distracting. He appears to be channeling Duke Nukem. Which is not necessarily bad, but Duke only gives short phrases. Definitely not suited to a novel. Note to author: If you're going to do another book, and we hope you do, get Jeff to do a better job, or get a new narrator. Additionally, though I really want to hear your next two books in this series, I can NOT stand another minute of Jeff's buffoon style reading. Also, am returning this audiobook as I am very dissatisfied.

Amazing

Absolutely awesome experience. Starting chapters are a little too fast on content (need more time to like the characters), but otherwise really good.

This book should have been adapted as the sequel.

After having binged this book I believe it would have made a far superior sequel to Alien. The story is far more involving and has a greater level of fear and tension. I can’t recommend this book enough if your a fan of the Alien anthology.

Great story. Wonky timeline

This was a great alien novel. Full of suspense and blood pumping thrills. (Not a spoiler) The only issue I have with the book is the timeline. Set between the first and second movies...with Ripley as a main character. Feels more like a retcon than a serial story in the series.

Still very good.

Really Boring and Bad Narration

I downloaded this audio book when Alien: Covenant came out last year, and began listening to it right afterwards. Immediately, as I began the book, the narration felt slow and annoying, and the narrator's character voices were border-line stereotypical. I pushed along through at least 75% of the book, until I stopped about February/March of this year, and I have never had the interested to finish it, let alone continue with it. However, I do wish to point out that this book was not for my, personally! Those who enjoy the Alien franchise, or just simply the genre of SciFi, then I would recommend this book, only for everyone to listen and try it out for themselves. But otherwise: Two Thumbs Way Down!!

Pretty Bad.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

If it was an original Alien story, not some weird thing shoehorned into the cannon timeline.

The whole thing is basically a repeat of Aliens and Alien: Isolation with Ripley simply having her memory wiped in the last five minutes and sent on here way like nothing happened (to explain why none of this is mentioned in Aliens)

What do you think your next listen will be?

No idea.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The. NarATor. Read. EvERY Line...As if HE was William Shat-NER. With every OTHER word being needLESSLY over emphasized for NO reason.

What character would you cut from Alien: Out of the Shadows?

Ripley.

Really it was pretty mediocre, read like fan fiction, but would have been at least passible if it was just a Alien spin off rather than trying to be a mainline story.

Any additional comments?

I wish I could trust audible reviews more. This book was terrible but seemed well reviewed which was why I got it.

Nice story!

I'd love to get my hands (or ears maybe ;)) on the next two books.

Not recommended

While I appreciate the idea of trying to do an Alien novel for me this one failed spectacularly. The plot doesn't hold any big surpises (which is not necessarily a problem) but on top of that not even the narrative is presentent in a competent way. For one the book suffers from an overuse of common phrases and expressions - there's no creativity nor serious attempt to do something that has a live of its own here. Most of the characters are your standard rough and tough spacefaring blue collar workers - which would be fine if that hadn't been done in most of the iterations of the Alien franchise. Throw all of those protagonists into a blender, take out some of the mashed up characteristics and there you go, you've got your crew here. Neither Ripley's words nor actions line up with what you'd expect from her movie character (at least from Alien and Aliens) for most of the time. When they do the narrators impression of her will take you out of the story since, well, females done by him just sound like the most superficial sorority girls you can imagine. That does not help. At all. As I've said, I appreciate the attempt but I can't say anything good about this story.
