When Elwood Curtis, a bBlack boy growing up in 1960s Tallahassee, is unfairly sentenced to a juvenile reformatory called the Nickel Academy, he finds himself trapped in a grotesque chamber of horrors. Elwood’s only salvation is his friendship with fellow "delinquent" Turner, which deepens despite Turner’s conviction that Elwood is hopelessly naive, that the world is crooked, and that the only way to survive is to scheme and avoid trouble. As life at the Academy becomes ever more perilous, the tension between Elwood’s ideals and Turner’s skepticism leads to a decision.

Cyril Avery is not a real Avery, or at least that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead.

Description
Random House presents the audiobook edition of A Ladder to the Sky by John Boyne.
A psychological drama of cat and mouse, A Ladder to the Sky shows how easy it is to achieve the world if you are prepared to sacrifice your soul.
If you look hard enough, you can find stories pretty much anywhere. They don’t even have to be your own. Or so would-be writer Maurice Swift decides very early on in his career.
A chance encounter in a Berlin hotel with celebrated novelist Erich Ackermann gives him an opportunity to ingratiate himself with someone more powerful than him. For Erich is lonely, and he has a story to tell. Whether or not he should do so is another matter entirely.
Once Maurice has made his name, he sets off in pursuit of other people’s stories. He doesn’t care where he finds them - or to whom they belong - as long as they help him rise to the top.
Stories will make him famous, but they will also make him beg, borrow and steal. They may even make him do worse.

good idea gone bad
Starts fascinating. So different. Than gets bit naive, slow, like the author would mix puzzle pieces from 2 different pictures.

Highly recommended
Loved it. The story and the audiobook is perfection. Maurice is a horrible person but you can't help wanting to know more about him. Excellent writing.

Tom Ripley becomes a writer
Maurice Swift is a Tom Ripley-like character who is prepared to do anything to become a successful writer. Cleverly written from several perspectives, with a nice twist at the end. Very well read by the actors, though the voice of Erich Ackermann almost spoiled it for me by faking a slight German accent and then mispronouncing each and every German name, including his own.
