Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.

After receiving a frantic letter from her newly-wed cousin begging for someone to save her from a mysterious doom, Noemí Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside. She’s not sure what she will find - her cousin’s husband, a handsome Englishman, is a stranger, and Noemí knows little about the region. Noemí is also an unlikely rescuer: She’s a glamorous debutante, and her chic gowns and perfect red lipstick are more suited for cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing. But she’s also tough and smart, with an indomitable will, and she is not afraid.

Wonderful Plot!

Description
Brought to you by Penguin.
In the start of an all-new series, the best-selling author of Uprooted and Spinning Silver introduces you to a dangerous school for the magically gifted where failure means certain death - until one girl begins to rewrite its rules.
Enter a school of magic unlike any you have ever encountered.
There are no teachers, no holidays, friendships are purely strategic and the odds of survival are never equal.
Once you’re inside, there are only two ways out: you graduate or you die.
El Higgins is uniquely prepared for the school’s many dangers. She may be without allies, but she possesses a dark power strong enough to level mountains and wipe out untold millions - never mind easily destroy the countless monsters that prowl the school.
Except, she might accidentally kill all the other students, too. So El is trying her hardest not to use it...that is, unless she has no other choice.
Wry, witty, endlessly inventive and mordantly funny - yet with a true depth and fierce justice at its heart - this enchanting novel reminds us that there are far more important things than mere survival.

Excellent
A Deadly Education is a tense, fiercely unique narrative with characters you care about rapidly in a very grim setting. I look forward to everything Naomi has in store in this universe for the audience.
The narrator did a great job too, very emotive performance.
If I were forced to give a critique it would be that I personally prefer more descriptions of the surroundings than was provided, but I'm fairly certain that was deliberate to make the reader feel more closed in as it is not a static trait in her other books.

One of my favorite authors, but...
Naomi Novik is a great author. Uprooted is one of my favorite all time books...but this was disappointing.
It is an example of a great idea that probably should have stayed an idea. I was looking at some of the 5 Star reviews to try and find something good to say....but I don't think we read the same book.

Top !
Cool world concept. It's refreshing for once that there is work and sacrifices for becoming a wizard. And nepotism is a problem everywhere.
It's end with an annoying and intriguing Cliffhanger. Loved the All Thing.
Speaker 100% good, lovely accent that brings life to Galadriel.
I'm waiting for the next book
