    Description

Suffering from writer's block and frustrated with his tentative relationship with hot but closeted LAPD Homicide Detective Jake Riordan, gay bookseller and mystery writer Adrien English travels to northern California where he finds a body in his front drive. By the time the sheriffs arrive the body has disappeared, and Adrien once again finds himself playing amateur sleuth. But when the game turns deadly, Adrien turns to Jake. Jake may be confused about some things, but keeping his lover alive is not one of them - no matter what the cost.

A Seamless Transition from the First Book

Josh Lanyon really outdid himself this time. This book is simply great. The story was so compelling I listened to the whole thing in one day! The book made a perfect transition from Fatal Shadows. If you haven't listened to Fatal Shadows yet, I recommend buying both and listening to them in order.

    Number 2: Very Enjoyable...

Number two in the series and I must admit that the mystery plot was a bit less obvious than the first book and the budding relationship between Adrien and Jake was tantalizing, to say the least. The twinge of jealousy from Jake was a welcomed surprise and certainly opened the door for hope. On a side note, I have been more careful checking my mailbox since reading this story! Another great tale by Josh Lanyon and again Chris Patton’s narration was excellent and added to the story. Looking forward to reading the next in the series! Recommend!!

A wondefull follow up to Fatal Shadows

Chris Patton's narration is even better in the second book of the Adrien English series. The was a very enjoyable listen of one of my favorite series.

    Fantastic narration, awesome mystery

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

YES! I've recommended both audio and book to several friends and they've all enjoyed it. The mystery is great, i really like the setting and absolutely adore the characters. A Dangerous Thing is an all time favorite of mine, and the narration is perfect while somehow still getting better and better with each book.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked best two things: the mystery, and the character arc. One of the reasons i like this book best out of the series is that the two main characters get to spend a lot of time together, figuring things out, both personal, and mystery-wise. I love the dynamic and the sense of humor.

Have you listened to any of Chris Patton’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I first listened to Chris Patton in Fatal Shadows, the first Adrien English mystery, and fell in love with his amazing voice and narration skills. He's exceeded my expectations and beyond, and he keeps getting better and better.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes! It made me laugh many many times, and also sigh happily often, and be on the edge of my seat, and more. There's no moment with no reaction in this book. Josh Lanyon's books always elicit a wide range of emotions.

    Continuing to love this series!

"Aren't you the guy who told me a cop's gut instinct is one of his best tools?"
"You're not a cop, baby. You're a bookseller. You don't have a gut instinct. You have knack for nearly getting yourself killed."

I love the blend of quick wit and humour with the intrigue of the murder mystery. But as good as the mystery is, of course I'm really only reading to see to the evolution of the relationship between Adrien and Jake.

I adore Adrien! He's the sort of guy I would love to have as a friend and as a friend, I want him to be happy. His admission (to himself) of love for Jake is painful because we know loving Jake won't be easy. Oh, but the first kiss with Jake - just beautiful!

I have been continuing to 'read' this series by listening to the audio version......Chris Patton does a stellar job of narrating this series. I loved the way he voiced Adrien - his inflection, his tone, the quality of his voice - and the sexy, gruffness of Jake is perfect!

A dangerous thing - definitely recommended

I was lucky enough to win a copy of this and I have spent the last couple of driving trips listening to the story. I was so lucky.
Firstly, I have all of Josh's books both as ebooks and in print as well. I'm now going to add audio books to my collection. When driving long distances listening to an ebook is a great way to pass the time. The story is interesting and Chris Patton does a great job at narrator.
I can't recommend this author, this story or this format highly enough.

Narration is great, but story is still awful

I…have issues with this book. The Adrien/Jake interactions is really all I liked about this book, because this the story has issues. First-off, I know the first edition of this book was published way back around the early 2000s, so this book is almost 20 years old at this point. I’m not sure anything besides the cover was edited, but there’s some racist language (like the n-word by a character to show how “backwards” he was but I want to say this was removed from the audiobook) and stereotyping in this book that definitely makes it an uncomfortable read. This book is extremely racist on top of a lot of other things. There’s the internalized homophobia that was already present in the first book, Fatal Shadows, so I’m not entirely sure I would feel comfortable recommending this series at all.

The story starts with Adrien having writer’s block. And wanting to get away for awhile. He decides to take a trip up to the ranch his grandmother had left for him up in northern California. He hadn’t been back in years and paid a man to keep an eye on the place. However, the minute he arrives at the ranch, he spots a body on the road. When he phones the sheriffs, and returns back to the spot, the body is gone.

The mystery aspect is intriguing. I read this book in one sitting. There’s a missing body but no one in town believes that anyone is even dead and believes that Adrien is just making things up. Problems start to arise when Adrien keeps digging into the whole affair. It’s a small town, and as an out-of-towner, Adrien looks like the number one suspect when another body turns up on the property. There’s a host of suspects. There’s the missing handler – the guy who’s in charge of looking after the ranch. There’s also a group of archeology students digging around Adrien’s property he definitely never signed off on. And then there’s Native American lore about the place that doesn’t sit well with Adrien.

Adrien and Jake are in a tenuous relationship. If it can even be called that. “Relationship” might be a step to much in Jake’s book. Even at the beginning, Adrien recounts the one time they almost kissed. But they didn’t because Adrien, as Jake puts it is, “not a chick.” I feel for Adrien, I really do. He’s in a rough spot of falling for Jake, and Jake keeps pushing him away.

Even as he felt Jake was the first person to call for help, Adrien found out that he’s not the only person Jake was sleeping with. They’re not in a monogamous relationship, and Adrien believes Jake is still in the BDSM scene with other guys. But it’s the shock that Jake is still sleeping with women. Jake isn’t bi or pan. He clearly identifies with being gay, even as he also hates himself deeply for it. Jake has spent his entire life pretending to be straight, and he doesn’t know, or want, anything different. This is the first time we get Jake’s age? We find out that Jake has turned 40 and is eight years older than Adrien.

There’s a fair bit of racism and Native American stereotyping that goes unchallenged in this book. Oh, Adrien looks down on the racist language, but that’s really all we get from him. He’s very judgmental and against the BDSM scene and is quite disdainful about Jake’s involvement in it, because it’s something he doesn’t try to understand, I guess?

The audiobook narration in this one is still good. Chris Patton does a wonderful job as Adrien and the voices he gives the characters feel really natural. I will say the pauses between scene breaks is correct in this one and feels less like something randomly shoved into the audiobook.

Anyways, I’m not a fan of this story, it’s pretty awful. But I suppose the ~action in this book and Adrien and Jake’s relative seclusion away from LA is what saved the book for me. If all the books in the series wasn’t already out, I probably wouldn’t bother continuing with the books. But, I’m interested in seeing how Adrien and Jake come together in the end, so onward to the next book!

Thanks to Amazon Prime bought entire series

Chris Patton and Josh Lanyon are the dream team . Their partnership writer , narrator makes this series so addictive, entertaining and fun.

So happy for Amazon Prime as been eyeing this series for a while now . As it's one of the most recommended MM Mystery series. But , as soon as my two audio credits a month drops , I already have tons on just released , standalones lined up.

You see, I wanted to get all 6 books the same time and binge listen. And that's what been doing since yesterday . So thanks Amazon Audible Prime.

    Loving The Adrien English series.

    A fun tale, but...

As much as I enjoyed the story and the characters, Jake is starting to grate my nerves a bit. I’m hoping that eases up in the following books. Adrian is alright, but I want more from him too.

I did notice a bit of audio skipping and repeating, so that was a little obnoxious.

Over all though, it was enjoyable.

    One of my favorite series

This is book 2 in the Adrien English series. I highly recommend the whole series (to be read in order), these are some of the "need to read"-books in the m/m genre. Josh Lanyon is an author who mangages to entertain without falling into stereotypes.

The narrator Chris Patton did such an excellent job that I'm definitely going to check out other books narrated by him.

Highly recommended but you need to listen in order because despite every mystery story is solved in each book, the relationship between Adrien and Jake spikes and crashes and survives over the whole series.

I already have read and reread the series on my kindle but I need to have them on audio, too. Yes, I think these books are so good.

    Chris Patton is perfect!!!

I've already read the entire Adrien English series but since I couldn't get enough of the series, I'm giving the audio books a try, even though I haven't heard an audio book that I really liked before. Apart from one narrated by Sean Bean which is why I thought audio books were forever ruined for me cause Sean Bean is awesome.

    I was wrong.

Chris Patton does a wonderful job with the Adrien English series!
Not only is Riordan's even better than I imagined it to be, but the intonation of every single sentence is just perfect!
Chris Patron really enhances the Adrien English experience!!
