Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.

All sorcerers are evil. Elisabeth has known that as long as she has known anything. Raised as a foundling in one of Austermeer’s Great Libraries, Elisabeth has grown up among the tools of sorcery - magical grimoires that whisper on shelves and rattle beneath iron chains. If provoked, they transform into grotesque monsters of ink and leather. She hopes to become a warden, charged with protecting the kingdom from their power. Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned. As a huntsman of the Church, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. But when Lou pulls a wicked stunt, the two are forced into an impossible situation - marriage. Lou, unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, must make a choice. A waste of a free credit
This book is a mix between Beauty and the Beast and A Game Of Thrones, written in the tone of a sulky teenager. Maybe I'm just too old for this, but regret spending a free credit on it. Listened up to chapter 4 and gave up.

Slow -at times boring but picks up pace later.
Beautiful descriptions though. I love the idea and the end..
The main character seems a bit dumb sometimes - I solved the riddle right away. But it's nice that she's not stressing to seem smarter or better than she is. They are accepting of who they are and maneges to relax even after facing horror. Makes me feel less stressed.

The best of authors that readers could wish for!
There is no limit to the wonder that is Sarah J. Maas. I was so invested in the story and characters that she had me crying for them by Chapter 10... And I never saw that twist coming at the end! She could have easily drawn the challenges out into a book each I suppose, but she never lets us down. As always, she gives us complete satisfaction and closure, and still manages to continue a series.

Insgesamt gute Geschichte, tolle Sprecherin

Holding out hope
This book was so hyped and I was looking forward to it a lot. Unfortunately, as much as I wanted to, I didn't love it. I do like the premise, but the main character was annoyingly stupid (I mean, the riddle she was supposed to solve to save them all was SO obvious and easy that everything happening after it bothered me to a point that I couldn't let it go) and the love story was predictable and cheesy if not even cringeworthy at times.
I absolutely didn't like the narrator and I think that I might have liked the main character a bit better if the narrator hadn't been so extremely annoying, but there is no telling now.
Finally, what redeemed to book a bit for me is the character of rhys and his and feyra's chemistry that was so much more interesting and convincing than that between her and tam. This is also the reason why I ordered the 2nd installment of the series (this time to read and not to listen to, honestly I can't take the bored and slow rendition of the story even for another second) in the hopes of maybe finding more rhys/feyra in there and a little more depth and character development. Fingers crossed.

mediocre
The beginnings of most scenes are missing, disturbing the flow of the story. The voice acting was ok, even though she was a little emotionless and the male voices were hard to differentiate.
The writing had some flaws, overusing crutch words and adverbs. The main character is swinging wildly between component and stupid, for plot convince. Her character is starting where she ends up and it's frustrating to read the autor striping the character of any progress she made.
The whole plot seemed pointless!
The way of sensory overload was close to the autistic experience, but it was a slow, agonizing listening/reading along.

3,5 Sterne
