Description
Alexander McCall Smith's much-loved series of novels is the basis of this full-cast dramatisation about the inhabitants of an Edinburgh tenement building.
Anthropologist Domenica MacDonald observes the lives of her neighbours and the neighbourhood in Edinburgh's New Town. Pat, a new young tenant, arrives at 44 Scotland Street to flat share with Bruce. Bruce is a surveyor with more of an eye for the ladies than a sound property.
We're introduced to five-year-old Bertie, who is controlled by his pretentious and intellectual mother, Irene - he's learning the saxophone, speaks Italian, and is extremely knowledgeable about many subjects. And then there's Matthew, setting up the Something Special Gallery with little knowledge of artists or paintings!
44 Scotland Street began life as a serial in The Scotsman before becoming a best-selling series of novels and now a BBC Radio 4 serial.

Author's way with words LOST
I just wanted a good reader to read this book to me. The author's humor and his way with words were lost in this format. I will pay closer attention and not purchase another "performed" book. I didn't like it at all.

Fast pace and character development not present
I've listened to all the original books in the 44 Scotland Street series before listening to this performance. The first time I listened to this, right after finishing the series, I gave up after an hour because I couldn't stand how the rewrite changes things. Months later, I came back for a second listen, only because I wanted to finish all my unfinished books.
The performance goes at a very fast pace, and I think unless you've read the original books, you'd have no idea what is going on and who's who. Ulysses pops out of nowhere with no introduction of who he is. A lot of the character development and humor that made this series charming is just not there at all.
It sounds like someone wanted to get a synopsis of the work and went through it in a whirlwind.

Great Performance...
Enjoyed very much, but a little hard to listen to in auto. Have to crank up volume. That's only complaint about this type of performance.
