The year is 1984 and the city is Tokyo.

A young woman named Aomame follows a taxi driver's enigmatic suggestion and begins to notice puzzling discrepancies in the world around her. She has entered, she realizes, a parallel existence, which she calls 1Q84 - "Q" is for "question mark". A world that bears a question.

Meanwhile, an aspiring writer named Tengo takes on a suspect ghostwriting project. He becomes so wrapped up with the work and its unusual author that, soon, his previously placid life begins to come unraveled.

As Aomame's and Tengo's narratives converge over the course of this single year, we learn of the profound and tangled connections that bind them ever closer: a beautiful, dyslexic teenage girl with a unique vision; a mysterious religious cult that instigated a shoot-out with the metropolitan police; a reclusive, wealthy dowager who runs a shelter for abused women; a hideously ugly private investigator; a mild-mannered yet ruthlessly efficient bodyguard; and a peculiarly insistent television-fee collector.

A love story, a mystery, a fantasy, a novel of self-discovery, a dystopia to rival George Orwell's, 1Q84 is Haruki Murakami's most ambitious undertaking yet: an instant best seller in his native Japan, and a tremendous feat of imagination from one of our most revered contemporary writers.

Reviews

"Murakami is like a magician who explains what he's doing as he performs the trick and still makes you believe he has supernatural powers.... But while anyone can tell a story that resembles a dream, it's the rare artist, like this one, who can make us feel that we are dreaming it ourselves." ( The New York Times Book Review)

The story is compelling and well-written, but it includes some inappropriate sexual content involving teenage girls and older men that feels out of place and could be completely omitted. These scenes—depicting inappropriate interactions—do not seem to serve a clear purpose within the narrative, and their inclusion distracts from the overall story. The existing fiction already captures the reader's interest effectively, and removing these scenes would enhance the story's integrity and appropriateness. It is good fiction

The sexual content describing teenage women and older men is out of context.

I listened through it as if addicted. Only bored by sexual references such as masturbation and so on.
The story is pleasant and the performance of readers is top.

There are times when the story’s pace drops off and you are left pondering whether it is worth taking a detour only to end up back in the main plot once again. Nevertheless, a great read / listen for fans of Murakami, but probably not a recommended way to discover the author for newcomers. Could be a bit on the long side for the uninitiated. The split of chapters between the different characters works well but the ending was a bit flat - after many chapters slowly unravelling twists and turns and seemingly impossible connections it just sorts of fades out.

Entertaining, if a little sprawling

I'm a bit shocked of how fast I listened to 48 HOURS of an audio book, the narrators are out of this world, they are great, the expressions, the tone of voice, everything is ON POINT. Seriously, this is the best audiobook I've ever heard. There's a song in german that someone sings, there's the throat clearing, there's the doubt in the voice, there's everything that is written in the book. I can even say that is better to listen to the audiobook than to read it because of all the things that probably as a western i cannot read or understand with the right accent or with the right pronunciation.

I don't think I need so speak about the story since well, it's Murakami. That's all we need to know.

BEST AUDIO BOOK EVER
