Description

War Is Peace! Freedom Is Slavery! Ignorance Is Strength! Big Brother is watching and listening. Yep, we’re talking propaganda, the fabrication of “truth”, the outlawing of dissent, the distortion of reality, endless war… and of course, thought crime. No we’re not talking about the goings on on 2011, were talking about the 1949 NBC University Theater’s adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984. This production originally aired on August 27, 1949, but is available today for your listening enjoyment. This is the very first adaptation of 1984 and it stars David Niven!

great classic, shabby recording

great classic, good dramatization and rendering, poor recording (several points where volume fades away entirely, constant crackling). I suppose it's to be expected from a 1949 radio recording but it made listening difficult for me.

Worth the buy, but get the unabridged book.

If you've never read the book this is a good taste of what's to come. The story really gets you thinking and it's well worth the buy. I'd still settle for the book though.

Love it

Very well done. I liked the drama that goes along with it. It was like listening to classic radio theater. Great story as well. I will be getting the full audio book soon.

Not great recording quality.

Great story. Great acting. Not great audio quality. Not enough to warrant not checking it out but it does get a bit annoying.

Great Performance & Adaptation, Poor Audio Quality

This is an excellent and well performed radio adaptation of a classic work. It's much shorter than the original, but it manages to convey the same storyline and key ideas. Beyond that, it's highly entertaining.

Unfortunately the audio quality is low, and there is at times too much background music and sound effects. Never the less, I'd recommend this recording as a time capsule of what the book meant when published.

This story is about far more than the United States or the Soviet Union. It speaks to the human condition and the nature of power. This story is psychological and political. Most of all it is both timely and timeless.

All hail Big Brother!

Very entertaining!

Love the audio on this. The plot is very close to being real to this day and age. Big Bother IS Watching.

Disappointed

Struggling to finish, love David Niven yet the Period Style was jarring to my nerves. If you like the 1930s Radio Format you may love it but I don't.

This is a heavily cut radio version of the book

If you are looking for the full book 1984 look elsewhere. This is a version that was recorded for radio and as such is literally 1/11th of the run time and content. Very good if you want to get a quick summary for a book review without reading the real thing, kind of spoilertasitc if you meant to read the full one like I did.

To its credit, the performance is quite good, and the fact that it was, as far as I can tell, the original audio as you would have heard from your radio at the time, is exactly the right atmosphere for the book. Its just too bad it's such a shortened version.

Good Primer

This production provides a :45 presentation of 1984. A well considered assessment is delivered about half way through, though I disagree with classifying the story as satire. For the uninitiated, listening to this before reading the novel will be helpful for following the plot. For those having read the story decades ago, this production will serve as a good reminder.
