Description

Number one New York Times best seller.

Winner of the 2014 Living Now Book Award for Inspirational Memoir.

"An enormously smart, clear-eyed, brave-hearted, and quite personal look at the benefits of meditation." (Elizabeth Gilbert)

Nightline anchor Dan Harris embarks on an unexpected, hilarious, and deeply skeptical odyssey through the strange worlds of spirituality and self-help and discovers a way to get happier that is truly achievable.

After having a nationally televised panic attack, Dan Harris knew he had to make some changes. A lifelong nonbeliever, he found himself on a bizarre adventure involving a disgraced pastor, a mysterious self-help guru, and a gaggle of brain scientists. Eventually, Harris realized that the source of his problems was the very thing he always thought was his greatest asset: the incessant, insatiable voice in his head, which had propelled him through the ranks of a hypercompetitive business but had also led him to make the profoundly stupid decisions that provoked his on-air freak-out.

Finally, Harris stumbled upon an effective way to rein in that voice, something he always assumed to be either impossible or useless: meditation, a tool that research suggests can do everything from lower your blood pressure to essentially rewire your brain. 10% Happier takes listeners on a ride from the outer reaches of neuroscience to the inner sanctum of network news to the bizarre fringes of America’s spiritual scene and leaves them with a takeaway that could actually change their lives.

A Meditation Adventure

A great and unique read for the genre. Harris’s skepticism and occasional acerbic humor makes this meditation book different from most. It’s also a narrative, and adventure. Of course, everybody’s experience in approaching and practicing meditation is unique. However, I think most readers will find a connection with Harris’s personal journey, and will profit in their own practice. I really enjoyed it! The last hour of this audio book are guided meditations.

very helpful and accessible

I listened to this twice in a row and I don't think I'm going to remove it from my phone for a while. I found it very helpful and it inspired me to pick up my meditation practice again. I am already seeing results

Incredible

The most grounded, accessible book on mindfulness I’ve ever read. If you are a busy-brained skeptic wanting to be in your head less and be present more this is the book for you.

Choiceless Awareness

Dan's description of the 10 Day Silent Retreat was priceless. He truly made his experience come alive for me. I wondered what one of those retreats was all about. He made me understand meditation (behind the waterfall) much better. This book is worth listening to, and as well I bought the book to read. Thank you Dan for making this book, for making it available on audible and narrating it yourself~!

Wish I read an overview

Way too long-winded and it took him forever to get to the real info! Fast forward to at least halfway through the book, you'll only miss his stories which are great if you are getting this book to hear about his lifes adventures. I wanted to learn more about his journey with meditation.

4 star book you’ll resentfully go through

Let’s say it’s the least painful introduction to meditation. The author describes his journey cutting through the religious packaging of meditation and boiling it down for you. I hated the long narration but then if you think about it, it’s the least painful when compared to other ways to get around meditation.

Funny and insightful

Great introduction to meditation and Buddhism told in an easy-listening quip-a-minute style. The last hour of the book is a variety-pack of guided meditations by different presenters.

Might turn you into a meditation believer

This is well written and narrated. The way Mr. Harris presents his scepticism towards meditation drew me in, and has convinced me meditation is indeed worth a try.

Encouraging Memoir

It was really good. I was expecting more of a how-to but knowing how much he struggles with meditation and mindfulness is really encouraging to a beginner. I will look into the resources he listed and use the guided meditation at the end to help get me started.

I couldnt get i to it. Too much self talk upfront.

Too much talk about his job history anf career path. Too exhausting to listen to.
