Histoire
Considered the first full-length detective novel in the English language, T.S. Eliot described The Moonstone as 'the first and greatest English detective novel'. The stone of the title is an enormous yellow diamond plundered from an Indian shrine after the Siege of Seringapatam. Given to Miss Verinder on her 18th birthday, it mysteriously disappears that very night. Suspicion falls on three Indian jugglers who have been seen in the neighbourhood. Sergeant Cuff is assigned to the case....

Great narration but wonky chapter-marking
Rédigé le : 17/11/2020
A wonderful tale wonderfully told. Narrated by a highly gifted and competent narrator. He brought every character to life and drew all the drama, suspense, humour and irony out of the novel. I thoroughly enjoyed it. My only criticism is that the chapters indicated by Audible did not tally with the book's chapters as announced in the narrative making it impossible to find one's way around in the recording.

Histoire
Profoundly moving and gracefully told, Pachinko follows one Korean family through the generations, beginning in early 1900s Korea with Sunja, the prized daughter of a poor yet proud family, whose unplanned pregnancy threatens to shame them. Betrayed by her wealthy lover, Sunja finds unexpected salvation when a young tubercular minister offers to marry her and bring her to Japan to start a new life.

The Korean subaltern to Japanese colonisation
Rédigé le : 30/08/2020
A well-constructed Korean family saga spanning the 20th century. Strong female characters carry the family through difficult times due to the social, religious and political upheavals they endure. Yet a woman's lot is a powerless one both in Korean society and in Japan as second-class citizens. The family's strong moral fibre means that even when as Korean immigrants they are forced to accept underpaid work or turn to the notorious pachinko parlours as the only means of getting rich, they remain honest and uphold the family's values. Thus inevitably attempts to come to terms with the injustices suffered lead to tragedy. Alice Hiroto's softly accented voice brings delicacy to the complex , often heart-rending narrative.
