All the horrors of hell stand between Snorri Ver Snagason and the rescue of his family, if indeed the dead can be rescued. For Jalan Kendeth, getting back out alive and with Loki's Key is all that matters. Loki's creation can open any lock, any door, and it may also be the key to Jal's fortune back in the living world. Jal plans to return to the three Ws that have been the core of his idle and debauched life: wine, women, and wagering.

From the critically acclaimed author of Prince of Fools comes the second volume of the brilliant new epic fantasy series The Red Queen's War. "If you like dark, you will love Mark Lawrence. And when the light breaks through, and it all makes sense, the contrast is gorgeous." (Robin Hobb) The Red Queen has set her players on the board…. Winter is keeping Prince Jalan Kendeth far from the longed-for luxuries of his southern palace.

Insightful, surprising and with groundbreaking revelations about our society, Everybody Lies exposes the secrets embedded in our Internet searches, with a foreword by best-selling author Steven Pinker. Everybody lies, to friends, lovers, doctors, pollsters - and to themselves. In Internet searches, however, people confess their secrets - about sexless marriages, mental health problems, even racist views.

Well written and insightful. After reading it, I understood what “big data” is about, what it is not and how to both use and make sense of it. The author do not claim it to be thorough, but it does gives us the keys for comprehension.

On the vastness of the ice there is no room for individuals. No one survives alone. To resist the cold, to endure the months of night when even the air itself begins to freeze, requires a special breed. Variation is dangerous, difference is fatal. And Yaz is different. Torn from her family, from the boy she thought she would spend her life with, Yaz has to carve a new path for herself in a world whose existence she never suspected. A world full of danger. Beneath the ice, Yaz will learn that Abeth is older and stranger than she had ever imagined.

Puzzled...

The story gripped me until the last two hours, when it became uselessly dramatic, therefore predictable.
I prebooked the second instalment White at midpoint... now, I doubt I want to go deeper in the story after such an anticlimactic déjà vu end...
The Book of the Ancestor trilogy (a masterpiece) got me to confide in Mark Lawrence craft as a writer... but now, I am not so sure...
Anyway, this book is worth a buy, if only for the first 16 hours... and the narrator is still so good that it’s painful...

Refreshing blurring of the genres of anticipation literature. It’s a tour de force of writing to have both storyline and characters seamlessly blend fantasy, science fiction and modern fantastic in a powerful narrative.

The book adds a dimension to both movies... by situating them in their environment. Strangely, reading the book after watching the movies makes more sense.

The story of Donald Trump’s rise to power is the story of a buried American history - buried because people in power liked it that way. It was visible without being seen, influential without being named, ubiquitous without being overt. Sarah Kendzior’s Hiding in Plain Sight pulls back the veil on a history spanning decades, a history of an American autocrat in the making. In doing so, she reveals how our continual loss of freedom, the rise of consolidated corruption, and the secrets behind a burgeoning autocratic United States have been hiding in plain sight for decades.

How the search for truth... is seen a conspiratorial...
Rédigé le : 17/09/2020
This book is not an indictment of Trump and his system. It simply sheds a spotlight on the systems and practices put in place to mass produce populist uprisings in the Western World... and, now, around the world.
Political and governmental institutions in the US and beyond owe the public an explanation about Trump rise to power. The corporate world needs to tell the world why it remained silent, since they don’t seems to apply the same restraint when it comes to denounce “activist” politicians or public figures... And... news organisations must be investigated for their complicity!!...
This is not an angry book or a call to arms, but rather a detailed statement of facts that have long been in the public domain and were strangely actively ignored... with the consequences we know today from Trump election, to the Brexit vote, the deepening of income inequality around the world...
And it is above all a reminder that by constantly vacating our seat at the table... we shouldn’t be surprised to end up as an item on the menu.

An entertaining illumination of the stupid beliefs that make us feel wise. You believe you are a rational, logical being who sees the world as it really is, but journalist David McRaney is here to tell you that you're as deluded as the rest of us. But that's OK - delusions keep us sane. You Are Not So Smart is a celebration of self-delusion. It's like a psychology class, with all the boring parts taken out, and with no homework. Based on the popular blog of the same name, You Are Not So Smart collects more than 46 of the lies we tell ourselves everyday.

The Founding Fathers tried to protect us from the threat they knew, the tyranny that overcame ancient democracy. Today, our political order faces new threats, not unlike the totalitarianism of the 20th century. We are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism, or communism. Our one advantage is that we might learn from their experience.

Rédigé le : 22/06/2020
Very informative and important text. And a MUST READ!!!
Nevertheless, it’s missing a part of the story. The United States of America have helped many countries (Indonesia, Bolivia, Peru, Venezuela, Israel, Egypt, Hungary, Poland...) into subverting their own democratic systems... as imperfect as those were for many of them... and, many times, it happened before DJT... and then it has been accelerated under him. The Eastern European revolutions against communism must not be considered as panacea...
The intention of the book is laudable, but its blind spots will be exploited to justify both the failings of newly liberated democracies and the arguments pointing at those failings to say “why bother? it was for naught...”

A must read for any man
Rédigé le : 07/06/2020
The information and resulting education from this book are fundamental introduction to women’s health. As a man, I realized that I knew next to nothing about the relationship between women and healthcare, and the structural and mental barriers that prevent them, let alone us, to decently care for themselves.
And why start with sexual health? Because it is “the concern” men are intimately involved with and have a strong influence on... from the height of our prejudices and egos... Disclaimer: this isn’t the author “battlecry”, just the realization that even with the best of intentions, we preach from a perch of beliefs shaped by ignorance.
By reading this, we won’t become better men, but do something a lot more important: allow the women in our lives to care for themselves in a sane and healthy state of mind...
Please read it.
