Ross Rosenberg reintroduces a 2021 video on his 11-stage Self-Love Recovery Program, the treatment counterpart to his book Human Magnet Syndrome, which explains why codependents — those with self-love deficit disorder — are pulled magnetically toward narcissists.
Unlike ordinary therapy, the program has rules, demands commitment, runs eight months to a year and a half, and follows an Eriksonian sequence where each stage must be mastered before the next. Early stages move from hitting bottom and finding hope, through studying the book’s concepts, to treating the condition as an addiction with its own withdrawal symptom (pathological loneliness) and relapses, then to undoing the distorted self-perception produced by gaslighting.
Later stages build a non-romantic support system, prepare for the fallout of setting boundaries — anticipating violence, smear campaigns, alienated children, financial and legal sabotage — and then weather that storm and its losses. Inner-child work follows, then a transition into “self-love abundance,” then dating again, which he compares to learning to ride a bike late in life. Stage eleven, he admits, is still unfinished.
In this republished video, Ross Rosenberg presents his Self-Love Recovery Treatment Program — the treatment counterpart to The Human Magnet Syndrome, his account of why codependents (Self-Love Deficit Disorder) are magnetically drawn to narcissists. Not conventional psychotherapy, it is a structured, outpatient-style program of 11 sequential stages, seen weekly over eight months to a year and a half, built on Erikson's principle that each stage's challenge must be mastered before the next can begin.
The arc runs from crisis to self-love abundance: hitting bottom and reframing victim into survivor; learning the Human Magnet Syndrome; treating SLDD as an addiction, with pathological loneliness as its chief withdrawal symptom; undoing gaslighting; building real support; and preparing for the "narcissistic storm" before setting the boundaries that trigger it. It closes with healing the inner child, reaching self-love abundance, and learning to date and live from it — a final stage Rosenberg admits he is still working out.
