SynopsisThe defining characteristic of an ir hanidachas (city that has been led astray) is that the many become one entity, something possible only in holiness and among the Jewish people, because their souls are connected to Hashem Who is One etc. In order for free will to exist, this phenomenon of becoming one entity is allowed to exist in the opposite of holiness, in the context of idolatry, but even then, it is possible only because it concerns Jews. When the Yerushalmi says that the judgment of Sodom (in the revi’i of parashas Vayera) was similar to the law of an ir hanidachas, (which is why “the property of Lot proves” that even the property of the righteous in an ir hanidachas is destroyed), even though the inhabitants were not Jews – it is because the concept that “I and Your people will be distinguished etc.” began only at Matan Torah. And although “We do not derive (a halachah) from what preceded the Giving of the Torah,” here the Yerushalmi is not deriving a law, but clarifying a reality – that the property of the righteous is not an independent entity, but part of the property of the city, and therefore the law follows that their property is destroyed. The lesson is that a tzaddik may not isolate himself and leave his portion of the world within an environment of an “ir hanidachas”; rather, he must remove it from there, refine it, and elevate it to holiness.
